I need to replace one piece on the wiper linkage, it’s the one from drivers wiper to the arm going to the wiper motor.
How does it attach/detach? Does it just pop apart by prying with a screwdriver? I don’t feel a nut on the underside but can’t see in there through the tiny access panel. I got my phone in there enough to sort of show the connection I’m talking about.
I would like to know beforehand rather than ruin it by just trying.

Picture to me, view a is upside down. Looks like a clip under there

Edit I was looking at it wrong. But it does look like a clip holding it together

I’m hoping someone has separated it before and knows. I’m taking that short arm in the photo off the parts truck, so I want to not damage it so I can install on my driver truck. The arm on my driver truck rusted through and snapped!

I believe there is a clip under there metal and you pry it out , similar to what is shows on the picture in “circle 8”

Can you get more
Light? Maybe use a flash! Hahahaa

best shot out of three tries, tough to aim when you can’t see. And my phone doesn’t fit into the access panel opening. :banghead:
The bottom side feels smooth and round, not a nut, and doesn’t seem like a clip…

Thinking about it, tomorrow I’ll unbolt it at the wiper, and then see if that tells me anything. Maybe when the far end is free, the short arm will pivot like a ball socket, which my mechanic friend guesses it has.

It’s not a clip

That is just one of those bushings… very hard plastic, very difficult to defeat
Lube is your friend and then pry them apart. You will likely lose this bushing it looks like it has already ripped

Jamie, are you saying it’s similar to that shift link bushing, or that exact part will fit?
What lube is best? I’ll need 150’ of extension cord to get a heat gun to the parts truck.
The rainy season here is just beginning and I totally need my driver side wiper.

Should be same bushing yes
Ford used these on transfer case and transmission linkages on the older trucks as well as your wiper arms

Any lube will work, pb blaster, wd40, household oil…I’ve never used heat but I could see how it would help! Those
Bushings are hard plastic and super tight!!!! Pry bar is your buddy
Could use a small torch? Just melt that sucker

I use Vaseline when putting it all back together, a pair of channel locks will help you seat the arm into the new bushing

Geez I may have to cut that access hole bigger on both trucks, to get the old one off and the new one on.

Can’t you remove assembly from truck and do the bushing work on the bench

I guess, I was hoping this would be a simple fix, but looks like it’s going to be more involved than I wanted. :shifty:

Finally pulled the part that needs replacing. Thirty years was it’s limit I guess!

Got the good part off the old truck and was able to get the bushing off in good shape.

Once I saw the good parts, I understood how the linkage all worked and went together.
I was able to assemble it all easily. I smeared some grease into the bushing and the ball and socket then popped together with slip joint pliers.
Thanks for the help everyone.

Excellent! As they used to say on monster garage

“Freebie!”
