Hello, I currently have a 2020 xlt with the base cloth seat package. I’ve been eyeing a 2021-22 red ST with the 21” rims package. My question is, do people feel the ipgrade is worth it? Thank you

i dont own an ST, let alone a 6th gen. but imo, for a 2 model year boost, it aint worth it if youre alright with your current XLT. the only reason i'd upgrade was: A. lack of power/want the v6 TT B. had issues with the XLT, and found a suitable replacement

if i didnt fall into any of the categories, i wouldnt upgrade. if youre fine with the power etc of the XLT, to me it aint worth it. maybe give it a few more years, unless theres something super compelling about the ST. lots of this question is subject to opinion, so i may have a different view than the next person... i also tend to hold onto vehicles for a long time 🤣

In this day and age, the dealer could have made him an offer he can't refuse. That's what they did to me. They offered me 32.5K for my 18 sport so they had something to sell on their lot.

For me, I’m wanting to get leather seats and really love the overall look of the ST. The power would be nice, but I’m not as worried about that part.

in that case see how much the dealer wants for yours and how much the ST is. sometimes for the price difference you can get your own leather seats and get ST badging, rims, etc. if power aint the concern

Well - I noticed that you mentioned that you had cloth seats in your Ex and it was a base package - and then you mentioned a 21 or 22 ST with 21" rims without even mentioning the upgraded engine. You apparently aren't happy with your base Ex and you want some specific upgrades. You mention a 21-22 so I'm not sure if you have a particular vehicle in focus to buy or if you are just unhappy with what you have.
Are you talking about an actual ST or just the ST Line which is still the base engine with an appearance package?
Either way you are really asking a question that only you can answer as there is no real quantitative way to evaluate that decision. You either want it and are willing to pay for it or you aren't.

I have an ST Line. I swapped out the OEM aluminum wheels for gloss black so it looks like an ST but has the 2.3. I don't need the extra ponies but I like the trim. Saves some $$ as well.

There have been a lot of improvements after the first year of production. A lot of feature deletions also though. Not sure what the upgrade would cost you but I would assume it's pretty high ($15-25k?). If you plan to keep it a while, the ST is definitely worth it. I like the look soooo much better, especially with the Street pack black wheels and red calipers. Other trims just don't excite me. As long as the reliability stays, I will probably keep my 2020 ST around for a while.

This is my thinking. When I see the ST, it just looks so much better than my XLT. I thought about just getting rims, but I think I’d still probably be disappointed. I do plan to drive this car until my kids are out of school. I’m probably looking at 15-20k increased cost.

The most important question is, do you think it's worth it? You're the one that will be buying/driving it.

This is very true. You know that feeling of walking away and looking back at your car? I don’t do that now. I always eye the STs when I see them somewhere. 😂 I guess I’m answering my own question.

if you want the ST, i say go for it. youre happy, dealer is happy with inventory to sell, only thing unhappy: family members and wallet. 🤣 guess the age old "how bad do you need it, are you eating sleeping dreaming with that one thng on your mind... cause if you want it all, you got to lay it all out on the line":D sorry i was listening to tim mcgraw this mornign, had to!

Get what you want but the Sport Appearance Package has all the appearance of the ST. Plus honestly I like the carbon grey painted pieces than black anyway. Get the ST if you want but you are probably not going to like the 17-18 mpgs you are going to get and filling up with premium fuel sucks too.

The car will look the same to you from behind the wheel either way.

Why not use some $ for modifications of your current ride. Make it the way you like it. Have seats covered in leather, get you some wheels and tires from the ol rack. Make it better than you can buy

I like the performance of the ST--and, you will too! You only live once. So, I'd go for it.

I have an ST and though I have many issues with this generation Explorer, I really like driving it because of it's performance capabilities. If the performance abilities of the car weren't important to me I wouldn't have been willing to pay the difference in cost with other members of the Explorer line. The cosmetic differences can be achieved on the after market for considerably less money. Just my opinion.

That's one reason I went with the Aviator. :D

i mean you arent going to come out. and yeah the st is fast but the 2.3 is not exactly slow.
