How coincidental. I was thinking to myself after bending a tie rod this weekend if any other newer Explorer's have done this. My spindle didn't snap off and we were able to get the tie rod bent back into position. The outer CV joint grenaded itself because of the extreme angle it had to endure.

I guess big tires and small tie rods don't always mix.

Anyway, after removing the rest of the driver's side drive shaft I was able to make the 800 mile drive home to Houston from my parents house in Las Cruces, NM yesterday.

Here's a picture of my bent tie rod.

bah youre a pesky clunk. :p

I still don't know what my mysterious "clunk" is yet. I'm too lazy to investigate I guess, but right now I think it's from the diverside rear shackle. I dunno, thing still runs fine so what do I care right?

Hey, I still haven't ID'd my clunk either....I've taken to talking to it in the hopes that it'll go away....

CLUNK

"oh yeah? Well clunk to you too!"

CLUNK

"*******!"

CLUNK

"go away!"

CLUNK

"AAAAAAAAAAAA!"

haha spas.. your funny

You know whats really funny?

ON the very first page of this site, the article about Why Build an Explorer....it still says that we dont know anyone who has broken any parts of the new IFS system while off road.....hehhehehehe time for an update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring on the D44's! The more of these IFS trucks get lifted, the more you pioneers are gonna step up and get solid axles under there, soon somebody will make a "kit" to do the conversion all based on your trial and error. I salute you!!!!

Now to come up with a million dollars so I can start producing the IFS to D44 conversion kits...... :)

410, I'm a machinist, you work on the design, I'll build the product:D We're going to be millionaires;) Spas, you have to talk nice to it, if the clunk klnows it pisses you off, it will get louder, if you make it think you like to hear it, it will give up and go away:rolleyes:

Muskrat, I work for Lerch Bates and Associates. Consulting, so not for an Elevator manu. but thats where we get all our employee's from! hhahahahaha

Who do you work for?

I work at a small shop here in NJ, right now doing production machining, boring job, and I worked for a tool and die shop making dies for aircraft and some gun parts

Boy I should have done that before...I called it a REALLY bad name this morning and the check engine light came on  I think my o2 sensor just isn't taking "NO" for an answer any more-every time I reset the computer, it's fine for 10 minutes then the light comes on again and the engine starts to run lean  Rat, what's the part # for 98 SOHC O2 sensors??

Remember, I think you got 3 of them, so make sure you know which one's out since they cost 'round 50 bucks or so apiece. BTW the 02 sensors don't really go into effect until about 10 minutes when the engine has warmed up, thats why the computer doesn't recoginze it right off the bat.

Who cares, I have a 97 4.0 OHV, your part # should be 98fttuna4x4x2

I wonder if my cats would enjoy roasted Muskrat  hmmm...

Thank YEW Matt! If the light comes on again (and I imagine it will) can I get an OBD II scanner to tell me which sensor it is or will it just say that an O2 sensor is out??

The OBDII scanner should tell you what specific O2 sensor is out. I know that's what my check engine light has to be about since it's doing the same thing yours does. But alas, I'm too lazy and too cheap to either buy and OBDII scanner or to have someone read the code for me. But seeing as that the light has been on for well over a year now, and my milage has stayed pretty consistant, I'm not too worried my computer is telling me something important.
