Whats In A Name?

It was hot humid august night. The winds have all but vanished. I was doing my best to keep the sweat out of my eyes. The A/C was dying in my 94 Explorer, lovingly named "Pugly", and there was no relief in sight. I decided it was time to stop throwing good money into bad. I was gonna do the unthinkable,.......I was going to commit the most heinous crime of them all! I was going to trade Pugly in for a newer model! Oh the heart break! The insanity of it all! I couldn't believe the thoughts were even going through my head.

I managed to get the old girl back home, to her resting place. She seemed at ease in her familiar surroundings. I had to come up with an explanation to let her know of my evil plan. So i just gave her that old wink and grin that she likes to see from me as we made it back home from another day of adventure in the treacherous Midwestern terrain. I did my best in hiding my cynical thoughts, as I walked around to her rear flank and gave her that little pat on her bumper, as I always have when we part for the night.

The next morning I gave her a real good bath, cleaned behind her mirrors, and brushed her grill. She still looked pretty good for her age. Oh sure she had the tell tale signs, gravity has got its firm grip on her, and I am not the best cosmetics guy in the world. she didn't seem to mind too much, she still kept her nose up and drove with pride.

After looking at many vehicles I just could not find anything that had the same feel as my old girl. Then it happened! Was I seeing a mirage? Was I so desperate to find another rig that I was blinded by insanity? I found my replacement! I quickly made a sale with the owner, and brought it home.

When I pulled in the driveway, my heart sunk as I looked into the yard to see my 94 looking at me in disbelief. She was sunning herself in the grass looking all shiny and then, she just looked away from me. My heart was tearing in two. I parked the new rig, and walked up to her and gave her a soft spoken "Hello". No reply. I tried to tickle her mirrors, no response. The tension was so great, you could have cut it with a 32 count fine tooth hacksaw. I had to explain to her that she gave me great satisfaction for many years, and we made a terrific team together, but the time has come for her to just relax and enjoy her final days. She finally revved up, and understood, her days as my work horse has ended (so we thought).

I introduced her to her daily driver replacement. The shiny new(er) next generation of her kind. The 95 Explorer XLT. She warmed right up to it. Before you know it they were swapping stories. Now I had to ask her for help. I needed a name for the new ride,
so I went to find her, and what did I see? Those two were grill to grill in the driveway. rubbing chrome! I had to get the water hose out and break them up! Sheesh, she was acting like a girl at the prom dance! I let the name thing drop for awhile.

The new(er) Ex needed to get its shots, and a physical. When I got the word on it's health, I about had a coronary. "What do you mean Doc"! I yelled. "Your kidding right"? I asked. The Doc just shook his head and gathered his tools. As he walked away, He said it had a 50/50 chance of survival. My stomach knotted up, my teeth ground, my heart raced, and I could feel the energy build up as I let it all out, "Why! Why! Why did this have to happen"! I screamed.

The prognostic exam from the doc was as such. It had a blown steering rack, the shocks were gone, the brakes were non existent, front sway bar was cracked in half, the 3rd brake light was out, none of the windows or the moon roof would work, the door locks were broke, the rear end LS clutch pack was burned up, the tires were all in need of replacement, the spare was a Firestone recall and flat, the engine had a nasty tick to it, the TPS was shot, the MAF was corroded, the battery had a dead cell in it, the hood shocks were not working, the rear hatch lock was jammed up and you couldn't open it with out a key in the lock, The carpet was stained to no repair, the rear window wiper didn't want to work, and we could not tell what year its engine swap came from. it was a mess, to say the least.

I went in the house to get my gun. I was gonna just put it out of its misery right there and then. I suddenly realized I was out of ammo, from shooting at the jeep that was in my field. I went to the computer to find a place to buy some cheap ammo, and I stumbled across this website, explorerforum.com that said it could heal any ford Explorer no matter what the problems were! I jumped for joy, I could not believe the things I was reading! I wore out the search button, asked a bunch of questions. I quickly broke out my pen and paper, feverishly writing down things as I was learning! I had found a cure for everything that was wrong with my new transport. It was a Godsend, an angel from the SUV heavens!

I sprung into action. I worked day and night, Pugly was right by my side the entire time, helping me in any way she could. I never seen this side of her, and was really amazed at how well she handled the pressure. She gently squeegeed the sweat out off my fore head with her soft wiper blades as I worked away. After an entire weekend of work, I collapsed. I needed some rest, and so did the 95. The sun crested over the hills, and awoke me to a new day. I shuffled my feet to the window facing the driveway, peeled the drapes gently back, and peered out at the 95. WOW!
It had a its color back, and was looking great! Now as the time went on, (and most of my paychecks), and the selling of almost everything I own, for funds to get the 95 to its former glory.

After some time to reflect on this name thing, I strolled up and whispered into Pugly's passenger side mirror, and she giggled with delight.

I climbed up onto the front bumper in my pajamas and robe half opened, with a cup of coffee in one hand and the daily newspaper in the other, I raised my arms with out stretched hands and proclaimed the new name of the 95.

BEHOLD...........THE BLACK HOLE!!!!!!!! (Then the neighbor yelled at me to close my robe)

The End................(or is it just the beginning?)

Actually, only some of this really happened. :D

Welp, Being that it's St Patty's Day, I was hoping to have a bit of good luck with the locker install. I got bad luck instead.

The locker will absolutely not fit in the carrier with the thrush washers. Tried it with one washer, still no go. Tried it with zero thrust washers and it fits.

Waiting on a call back from Richmond tech. Another stroke of luck, there taking a 3 hour lunch break. Prolly having a few pints of Guinness and some corned beef somewhere.

Edit: Couple hours later......Still waiting.....Grrr
Edit: Still no call back and no email replies
Edit: The new supplied cross shaft has a smaller hole for the stock roll pin. I have to go hunt one down now, as they do not supply a new roll pin for it.....ack!
Edit: Gap is .207" without the thrust washers installed. Two .031 washers=.062" .207"-.062"=.145" within tolerances. Sounds great until I go to install the locker! The opening on the carrier is not big enough to let me drop the 2nd half of the locker inside. It hits the locker half on the ring gear side, stopping it.Remove the washers, and it just fits. WTF!

Future reference...
The distance between the halves of the LockRight, that is between the two drivers, should be about 5/32-inch (.156-inch, or 3.86-mm). The tolerance limits are between .145-inch (3,68 mm) and .170 inch (4.32-mm). If this distance is much over .170-inch, either the case is quite worn or the thrust washers are missing or are too thin and problems should be corrected before proceeding further.

Spew mate!!! Did you kick a leprechaun or something?

They are tiny little bugger's (check the bottom of your workboot's) Hope you get it sorted with minimal fuss, those blokes at Richmond tech must still be on the turp's.

Richmond tech might still be out to lunch. St. Patty's day, green beer, and too much cheer.

Alright, there is 2 little parts that go inside each half of the lockers. One is like a spacer, and the other is like a washer with a raised inner lip. The coupler & the driver fit together to make one half of the locker. These inner parts fit inside one another. So there is 4 parts to each half.

The install goes...Ring gear side first...thrust washer, driver, small washer, than the coupler with spacer goes in. Next goes in the other sides thrust washer, driver than washer with protruding lip.

This is where it gets crappy. 6 parts are in now, and 2 left, the coupler and spacer. The washer with protruding lip stops the last coupler with spacer to drop in. It's not the carrier stopping it, its the actual protruding lipped washer that does.

The spacer slides back and forth withing the coupler half. This is what pushes the teeth apart from the driver and coupler to ratchet for turning. So I can't grind down any of it to allow the last 2 parts to drop in. I can't go without the thrust washers because it puts the gap out of spec, and the locker wont work. I can't force it in there either as the lip stopping it is at least .0064", which is a lot of metal to damage.

I do believe, I have to return the locker as I just can't get it to work. And that really pisses me off to no end. 2 days wasted so far,(still have to put it back together), a rig torn down, and a lot of mental anguish.

Edit: My4by is looking into this for me, as they got the same back up info as I received and I'm sure they don't like selling wrong parts either.

So far this project is dead in the water. Rig is still tore down & on stands.

Heard back from Richmond today, and asked to send stamp id # on all parts thinking they were wrong. Nope. They all checked out. So than the talk went from wrong parts delivered to me having the wrong carrier.

They swear the 2311-LR is indeed the correct locker, and I must have the bad part. WTF? So I sent these pics to him to prove whats up.

See the protruding lip on the right inside? That is one half of the inner spacer. This is whats stopping the inner driver from going in.

Without the thrust washers, it drops right in.

That's got to be frustrating as all hell mate, so close yet, so far.:thumbdwn::(

Welp, I have to eat crow here. I followed the directions too closely :(

After staring at those pics, a light went on. Thought hmmm, what if....I put the 2 spacer halves together, insert them in the inner driver half? So I ran outside and tried it....what do ya know? It fell right in place! I am such a fracking Tard! I over thunk it for 7 hours. What a goober.

Looks like I got some "Splaining" to do with Richmond and to my4by...lol I feel like such an ass. Good news is it was my error, and it is in there! All I have to do now is find a roll pin that fits in the new cross shaft. Rains are coming down tonight and tomorrow. I have to work Sat, Sun, & Mon, so Tue is the day to get it back together.

My apologies goes out to both my4by.com & Richmond Gear. Sorry!

That is f*****' AWESOME mate, it doesn't get much better than that. Sweet.

Thanks Greg, that helps. I feel horrible for over thinking this thing. I'm in knots because I can't believe all the crap I caused thinking I was right and they were wrong. I am so much at fault here it's amazing I can get a pair of pants on right now, to go outside and kick my own ass.

Hahahaha, don't be too hard on yourself mate! As much grief as this has caused you, you've probably helped countless other people who might find themselves in the same boat in the future. You'll sit back with a coldie and have a laugh. We're all allowed to have an occasional bad day bro'.

Yeah, I had to put the directions away and just think on my own. The manual has both c-clip & cir-clip directions mixed together, making it a pita to decipher. I guess I am just a dumb hick sometimes. Oh well, a lesson in humility, a loss of some confidence points, but gained some experience and some knowledge. Why does it always have to be the hard way though

Well you did figure it out, go with that.

I went through something similar with my first Torsen diff. Those have an inner spacer(2) which make installing the axles interesting if you are not sure what to do. I had to call Reider to find out, the spacers are pushed to one side to get the opposite axle to go in(for the c-clip). I thought something was wrong with the carrier until they put me through to Torsen to find out.

Yeah, good came out of bad here. I have egg on my face, but will forget about that when I am out on the trails. :)

I was admittedly nervous about doing this since I have never done one before, so I stuck to the instructions instead of using common sense and my own problem solving skills. Once I put the manual away, it all came clear...lol. I know that sounds crazy, but thats the facts.

Good Glad you got it done

I will over after getting the Mounty and you can install one in that too :D LOL

Hey, now I know how, and which lunchbox fits, not a problem, bring it on over.

Were supposed to get great weather here tomorrow, so I am going to get it all back together after work tomorrow. Woot!:D

No luck finding a new pin for the Richmond cross shaft. :(
Went to as many specialty hardware stores as I could, and tried every thing they had with no luck. I even bought a new asst pack of 315 pins and went through that with no luck.

The hole size on it is metric and smaller than Fords.
Richmond=5mm
Ford=7/32nds
1mm difference, just enough to make me miserable. I thought about drilling out the Richmond 1mm larger with a carbide bit but, the meat on the end of the shaft is pretty narrow to begin with, so I opted out of that idea completely. After some more thought on this, I concluded to this fact...The roll pin is held tight in the carrier hole itself, not the shaft. A smaller roll pin in the Richmond shaft would just fall out in the carrier anyways.

I have no choice but to reuse the stock cross shaft in it. I even mentioned it to Richmond tech but they ignored me completely on that matter. Why they couldn't supply a $.30 pin with the locker is beyond me. Aussie does not supply a new shaft, and you can reuse your stock shaft with it. So, a little heads up here on the front Richmond locker, you pay extra for the cross shaft, but I don't think you can use it. Aussie is cheaper, and this might be why, since it does not supply one.

Getting started on putting the dif back together and hopefully have it installed by the end of the day. Does anyone think I should bother with a write up on this, or have I spooked to many of y'all? LOL
