Hey all, over the weekend my explorer decided it wanted to top out at 5mph, and since despite being 12 years old, it's definitely the nicest bed newest car I own, so I felt I should go to a shop instead of kicking it until it works like I've done with my other cars. It's got 115K on it, and full service records, as well as a 3 month old transmission. The shop I limped it to just told me they want 1700 for an aftermarket Cat, and that seems like too much to me. I was hoping someone here could help me know if it's the right price, because I've never really had a car that I bothered fixing right, instead of rigging. On my old 92 bmw it was about 300 for a new cat and exhaust, but I realize it was an older cheaper car, but that's a huge difference in cost, that's about what it was for my Subaru too. So umm... How much are cats? Also, why would it slow down so dramatically? Aren't cats just for emissions? I guess if the o2 sensors were gone it would run a bit lean or rich, but that seems excessive.
