I'll be using it between the Explorer and my Audi. Does anyone else have Garmin StreetPilot experience with any tips about anything?

you will love it, my Garmin rules
I am not sure how your unit there works, but with the map software you can choose your base map. For me it is basically CO and WY all the way to the CA coast and down to Mexico, because I drive this area alot. When I first got my Garmin it only had a 32 MB memory card and when I would load this base map it would not show any details, like just highways and interstates.
I eventually learned that it was limited by the memory, so I upgraded to a 1 Gig card and now I can look up addresses and it will tell me how to get there even with voice, it even worked in the boat and if I wanted to risk it I could have used it to get to Catalina in my 19' Bayliner even if it was foggy, something I never did butI could have with the garmin :)

I friggin love my garmin :)

Nice Colin what did that run you??

List on the Garmin site was 8 bills, but I found it on Amazon for $510.00.

Sweet, I've been looking for one. Post up on how it works and what you like and dislike please.

Nice price.. I was looking at one the other day and the best price I could find locally was $684 :(

So far it's sweet. I've only used it once so far on the way back home from my buddy's work.

I programmed in my "Home Base" location when I first got it. It gave me directions that I wouldn't normally take, so I went my own way. As I made different turns than what it suggested, it says, "re-calibrating route", then took me the way I wanted to go from there. It gives you the choice of the most direct route, or the fastest route.

Hopefully my buddy Winter will be able to make me the mount today and I'll tak pictures tonight or tomorrow of said mount. I don't want to put the sticky mount on my dash and I don't want to spend the extra money for a vent mount. In my Audi I have a single cup holder in the middle of the dash. I measured a red "party cup" and cut it to size so that would be snug in the cup holder, marked a new uncut cup and gave it to him yesterday. He is going to make it out of urethane by just pouring it into that cup.

pays to have Winter as a buddy doesnt it :)

You have no idea. With all the cars I've owned (14) and all the things he's done for me, I probably owe him $15k - $25k. Thankfully he's cool with a meal after the days work is done. ;)

I know that drill :) Barter system rules!
I am replacing the trnamission in my neighbors built 91 Cherokee, his son has built this jeep really nice, beat the living crap out of it off road and the trans is dead (something about 3.55 with 35" tires and 205K miles) so they wanted to sell it only because they figured $3K for a trans.
We found one for $200 and his son is gonna work with me to install it.
Hes like "what do you charge?", I am like "beer" hahahaha but then I remembered hes a landscaper guy and he does sprinkler systems.....so next spring guess whos doing the labor on my sprinklers :)

Winter fab is *****in I am sure hell make you something real nice

What kind of mounting system does it use? I have a tomtom and its great, but I'm not a huge fan of the windshield mount, so I usually stick it onto the speedometer since it has a more accurate one built in.

The ball end of this goes into the back of the unit, and the other side is a suction cup.

The red circled part is the mount pictured above

The blue circled part is the disc that has double sided tape on it. That red piece on there is the protective layer you need to peel off.

You can use it for dash or windshield but don't want the sticky stuff on my dash and since it's illegal in CA to use a windshield mount, that was out of the question.

now wait a second, the reason it goes on the dash or windshield is for the GPS antennea right? So to mount it down low did it come with an external antennea?

Mine was cheaper, like 20 bucks or something. :p:

i see that is one odd dash.
I got the external antenna for my Palm from the gps store online, it was like $12, it works perfect, it was real easy to hide the wire along the dash and use double sided tape to hold it up there, its hardly noticeable and mounts under the windshield so no holes in the roof

I'll probably get an external ant. eventually.

Steve - Yours doesn't talk to you (in different voices and languages), play mp3s, have bluetooth or points of interest stored in it. :p:
