After getting into some bigger rocks and getting ready to do an SAS/SOA, I figured in the meantime I'd get some sliders at least built for the truck so I can have a little protection on the trails. Credit for the design goes to Chad as I got the basic shape from his build. Anyway what do you guys think about this design? Basically the 2x4 stock is about flush with the side of the truck and the tube is another ~2.5" out from that. I may end up using a smaller stock to go to the frame like 2x2 square or 2" tube to save $ and weight but those are small details.

I like it. The only thing I would suggest is push it out further than just the 2.5" from the body. That's not much for protection, at least in my experience. Mine stuck out more than that and it's a good thing they did. I would have the 2x4 out that 2.5" then add the 2.5" of tube on top of that. Plus, you could use it as a step as well.

Of that's course just my opinion, but there it is. :)

I agree with Froader. I have most of the steel to build mine, just no time. Remember that when you do the SAS your tires will stick out abit further then they are now so you need to factor that width in when designing. Mine will be a copy of Chad's as well, if you notice how far his sticks out even with his SAS and see some of the action pic's and videos of his rig they wouldn't do him much good if they were set inboard any further. I'd use the 2x4 in the brackets to have the strength, plus to hold up the serious weight the sliders are going to weigh. I really gotta find the time to build all my stuff, hard to do when I work 60+ hours a week and have a 14 month old that I don't wanna miss time with.

Thanks guys for the input. Just as a reference the design above weighs 64.5lbs without welds and everything marked as plain carbon steel. I'll play around with it and change up the dimensions of the frame mounts and see where that puts me.

Looks Good!

I vote for same or narrower than track width so you don't get wedged between a rock and a hard spot. Just wide enough to protect the rockers and provide a step in--

Also, now is the time to make room for the emergency brake cable. Silly as it sounds, the support gussets will be in the way. You don't want it to rub or hang up there--

this. Check out my slider build to see how I made a gusset that allowed the brake cable to pass through.

those look beefy!

Here are a couple shots of mine to show how far out they were. I don't have it anymore so I can't tell you just how much that is, but maybe the new owner can. They were also welded to the frame with two (2) 2x2s and held up fine to the abuse I gave them.

Thanks for the tip about the brake cable. I wouldn't have thought of that until I was done fabbing and bolting them up to the frame.

I definitely need 3 supports. These things are forever long between the wheel wells since the ST is so much longer of a wheelbase. Still not sure whether I want to stay with 2x4 or go with 2x2. Ones heavier but beefier, the other is lighter and less money... Choices.

I say don't skimp on the protection, just like condoms, well worth the extra money. LOL

Check out Chad's build thread to see how he did his e-brake cable.

So are those bolted around the frame, or welded on? They look like you would have bolts running either through the frame or on top of it.

We used tubing for the gusset, which allows for the ebrake cable

Bolts go through the sleeves above the frame and the bottom part of the "u" is against the bottom part of the frame

i really like the look of those
