    Starter Recommendations

I'm fairly sure my starter is toast. Do I pay the extra and stick with Motorcraft? Or is Bosch or AC Delco a reasonable option? Anyone have any experience with either brand in general or starter specific? Thank you!

2003 with factory sub & RES

So what's the trick to make it all work? The factory radio with factory sub sounds fine to me, but the changer is jammed. And with the handful of factory indash changers I've seen, none of them seem to work very well after some age. I'd rather go with a decent Kenwood or Alpine stereo - $150 or...

2003 Hard Shift into Reverse after warm

Just picked up an 03 EB 4.6 thats fairly clean for its age. One quirk I've noticed is the firm shift into reverse, especially after its warmed up. Is this a solenoid issue? Or a valve body issue? I haven't noticed anything problems going forward through the gears. Thank you!

    Idler & Tensioner pullies

Fairly certain I have an idler pulley squealing, can someone confirm that these are the correct ones for top and bottom? Dayco 89006 and 89015 for idler pullies. I've been considering a new tensioner pulley as well. I can't find what appears to be the correct arm for the 2000 - can I just get...

    Moog Balljoints

I'm looking to get the front balljoints done. I had planned to stay Motorcraft, but I haven't found upper balljoints from Motorcraft, just the whole control arm. Rockauto does list Moog though. I thought Moog was a decent brand, but I can't remember in recent years. Go with Moog upper and...

    Upper & Lower Control Arms

I've seen posts and videos about changing the upper control arm, but what about the lower? Got it back from the rear diff rebuild and they said upper and lower balljoints need replaced. Since I'm not planning to get rid of it anytime soon, why not change the whole control arm? Not only replace...

    Sudden blend door failure?

00 5.0, no heat. Gut says blend door. Brain says otherwise because I never heard gears clicking like I did in my 94 Thunderbird. I had good heat, then it sat for a while (tierod end and I was an idiot) back together and barely had heat and then just cold air. At the same time, discovered a leak...

    Looking at an 2007

My 2000 has seen better days and been thinking about replacing it. I came across an 07 XLT V6 4WD with 127k miles. I also have an 04 in the stable (currently getting the rear diff rebuilt and front wheel bearings) Is there anything in the 06-10 that I should look out for? The quick glance I...

Dash lights, loss of power steering, no oil pressure

Wife was coming home yesterday when the battery and service engine soon lights came on, oil pressure dropped (according to the gauge) and she went to pull off and said it was tough to turn the wheel, I'm assuming like no power steering. Within 10 minutes or so, she restarted it and it ran fine...

    Gear Oil

I read somewhere a while ago about a TSB and using 75w140 for the rear? Is this legit and needed? Or can I use 75w90 for front and rear? Plus adding a bottle of friction modifier in the rear differential? I think the R&P is howling in our 2004 so I'm going to see if a fluid change will help...

    Transmission pan capacity

I'm fairly certain I've got the infamous 4R70W shudder. It feels like a miss and only noticeable from 35mph to 45-50. I'm planning to drop the pan, swap the filter, and refill. The catch is, I don't remember how many quarts the pan holds. I want to say it's 5-6 quarts? Our 04 hasn't shown any...

    Driveshaft interchangeability

I have a feeling I know the answer, but I want to verify before I spend money on something that won't work. I need to replace the rear driveshaft - I'm assuming I can use any 99-01 V8 driveshaft on my 00, correct? U joints went real bad and took a chunk of the yoke with it. I'd love to do the...

    Console Changer

I've got a 2000 with a 6cd changer in the console. Is it honestly worth anything in this day of digital media? Is it difficult to remove? I haven't poked much in the console, but I'm hoping not. I wouldn't mind the extra space.

4WD Auto TC & Tire size

2004 Eddie Bauer 4.6, 4WD Auto - not full time AWD. Is this transfer case picky like the AWD one when it comes to tire sizes and tread depth? Starting to shop for tires and wife is concerned on budget. Can 2 get replaced and replace the other 2 at a later date and not throw off the transfer...

    AWD and tire sizes

I believe I know the answer, but want to verify with the knowledgeable folks :) 2000 AWD, had a flat tire a few months ago, replaced the tire and went about. Fast forward a few months and time for tire rotation. There has been a small vibration when slowing down from 70 and now after the...

    U Joint Replacement

I've had a vibration at 25, 45, and 65 mph the last few weeks and now I've noticed a clunk when going from reverse to drive or vice versa. I'm kinda suspecting the u joints on one driveshaft or the other. From what I found, it looks fairly straightforward. I just want to double check that the...

    P0174 on a 5.0

I'm a bit puzzled as to which direction to go with solving this. On cold start, it takes 4 or 5 tries to get it started and for the first few minutes, it had a rough idle. It does smooth out and runs good. At part throttle, it drives fine. But anything past half throttle, it almost acts like...

    Aftermarket Gauges?

We all know the oil pressure gauge is a joke. Fairly sure the water temp gauge isn't 100% accurate either. I've been throwing the idea around of installing an electric oil psi and water temp gauges. Anyone else done this? Where did you put them? Thanks!

    Auxiliary lights and 2 switches

I've got a set of cube LED lights I'm going to mount on the back with the intention of auxiliary reverse lights controlled by a switch up front. I'd also like to have a toggle switch in the rear hatch area that allows me to turn on the lights if I need them (like helping someone on the side...

LED Light Bar and where to mount?

I'm in a pickle here - planning to get a light bar for my X and not sure of the best place to mount it. Should it go on the grill guard or on the luggage rack? My thinking is higher means more visibility? I'm also planning on getting 2 small lights and mounting somewhere on the back for aux...

4406 swap - to do or not to do?

I've read up on the 4406 swap and very much like the idea. I don't off road with mine, it's just my daily driver. I've got the AWD for the Nebraska winters when we get enough snow that driving gets interesting. Is the swap still worth doing? Trying for some unbiased opinions here :) Thanks

    Dimmer Switch

No issues with my interior lights or anything staying on or not coming on. But I noticed the dimmer switch has a "switch"? when you scroll all the way down. I can't seem to figure out what it does. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

    00 and American Racing Wheels

I'm reasonably sure the answer is yes, but I can't find a definite answer. I'm planning to buy a set of 16x8 American Racing AR172 Baja for my Explorer. I recently bought new tires and would like to keep them. Will my stock tires fit on the AR wheels? I'm assuming the AR wheels also have the...

Dual Exhaust, Y pipe, and space

Eventually I'm planning to do something with my exhaust. The plan is a dual in/dual out Flowmaster, but is there enough room for a SI/SO plus a Y pipe to have dual exhaust? Or is a dual out the way to go? Thanks

    Grill Guard Install

I've spent a while trying to search for pictures of the mounting brackets for a grill guard with little success. I scored a guard on Craigslist for 50 bucks. It did come with brackets - I just can't figure out where the top brackets bolt up - the ones behind the grill/bumper. Oddly, the...
