Hey all - we have a 2004 Ford Explorer with about 97,000 miles (~40,000 on rebuilt transmission). As we were approaching the 100k mark, we took it into the dealership to have it looked at. Man...did my stomach drop when they called about the repairs:
$1,950 to rebuild/overhaul the rear end...
 Do anybody know where this hose should be connected... I was lubing my bolts to get ready for a bushing change and find this guy just hanging around.
96 Explorer 4WD. Sometimes won't shift into gear, often after backing out but could be anytime. If you move the shifter back to park you can hear the gears grind down. Sometimes that is all it takes to reset but often I have to do this several times to get it going. I've been told it is fairly...
My first post here but I have been reading this forum for years and am very happy and grateful to see the Ford Explorer community is in fact so large and resourceful. I am in a bad situation and could use some advice from anyone who might have experienced what I am.
My front hubs/CV joints...
Okay, a little background on my driving... I am an aggressive driver with a heavy foot, always complete maintenance on time and fix issues when they come up. If I could I'd go back to a sports car, but with a family in tow... I'm happy driving my V8 Explorer.

I have a 97 explorer AWD with the 5.0. It shakes when I'm driving at any speed when I make turns and am in reverse it clicks as if I were making a sharp turn in 4wd low I checked the hub by jacking it up and seeing if the tire would shake I also checked the tie rods and ball joints does anyone...
Hello again all,
I just got my truck back after getting a mechanic to replace the block and all other components. He did alot of whining and complaining about the extra work, but nonetheless the switch from a late 90's Explorer block to '02 was a success, just took some messing around. The...
Is there anyone running posi/LSD in front and rear or lockers in front and rear? And how do they handle on the road and in snow? I'm leaning toward posi units in front and rear seeing as how I use the truck for snow and sand and heard lockers will cause sliding out in the snow. Let me know what...
Hey Guys,
Here is my newest "How To" video, How to Change Rear Differential Fluid. This is definitely some good preventative maintenance at about 100K miles. I will be making a shorter version that goes over the basics. This is the in-depth one. The idea is after watching this video, anyone...
Hello again. Vehicle is 08 Explorer, 6 speed, 4wd. 68K. Started noticing a noise from front end which sounds like a bad bearing or knobby tires. Noise continues after: new front wheel bearings(replaced twice in 2K miles), new front half shafts, new tires, brakes, alignment. Car drives out very...
I can't seem to find any help on my problem. Today I decided to test the 4wd drive out cause , winter is around the corner. While sitting still I push the 4hi and all the lights illuminated and herd clicking noise. As well as a clunking noise in the front end not sure where it was coming from...
Hello. I have an 08' EB 4.6L running the 6 speed and is 4x4. 66K miles. I have a whirring noise coming from the front end, while driving 55mph+, on a smooth road. I have a gift of being able to hear these noises, but not pinpoint them. I recently had both front bearings replaced. Tires are just...
I have a 2001 explorer sport and my rear diff is leaking right at the pinnon seal. I don't know how long it has been like this but it is pretty bad. It is all over the bottom, gas tank, diff, and drive shaft. When I park it for more than a few days, a puddle forms. Is it serious or should I get...
I have a 2003 Explorer Limited, 4.6L AWD 3.73 LS rear.
As many others have experienced I also have noise from the rear. Although mine isn't quite the same as what others have posted in these forums. I do not have a whine noise that comes on around 35mph and disappears at 60. Mine sounds...
So i have a 99 explorer sport v6, 4.0 OHV, 160,000 miles. Two weeks ago i went out to drive it and as I started driving I immediately had no power at all. When i hit the gas pedal it would barely even move, especially going up hills, and the car would shake a little. But when i shift in...
I'm having issues with my 2002 Explorer 4WD 4.0L -- it started with a slight "humming" noise from the front end...can start to hear it at about 20 mph and gets really loud at 30-40 mph -- then seems to go away after about 50 mph. Here's what I have checked/replaced:
1. First, really thought...
Hey everyone, I'm wondering if I can install a limited slip diff in my 2000 XLT from a donor truck of the same year. It has an open differential at the moment, axle code 45. My friend's 04 Sport Trac has a D2 and that thing will power through almost anything in 2WD. I'm just wondering how...
I have a 2002 Explorer Sport 2 door and I am trying to figure out if it has an open differential or a limited slip diff. The door tag is kind of faded so I couldnt see all the codes on it but I did look at the rear diff and the tag on it says this.

Hi Guys,
I’m reading for quite some time in this forum and found some very useful tips, video and photo tutorials. Thanks very much for all your posts
Anyway, now I have a problem where I’m stuck and can’t find anything, neither here nor anywhere else.
I’ve got a ’97 Explorer XLT...
I put this thread in the Zuke forum because I don't believe Chev made any of this thing really.
Anyway, 2000 Chev Tracker 4dr, 4wd, 5 speed 130,000 kms.
4 wheel drive hasn't worked for a short time, I hadn't had the time to figure out why but today I noticed that while driving in 2wd there...
I have an explorer with electric 4WD and auto-locking hubs. When switching to 4WD, whether High or Low, the dummy light on the dash comes on, but the front axle never gets power.
The engine turns the front drive shaft whether in 2WD or 4WD, but the axle doesn't get power. From this...
I have a 93 Ford Aerostar, going down the Freeway at anything over 55, I get a high pitched noise. I replace the front bearing on both side of the front axle. I am not sure however if it is the rear axle bearing or something in the differential. The noise does not change with coasting or...
Hi guys. Got an unusual situation here.
Today I took my 96 Explorer in for the front bearing/hub replacements that my dealer offered to do under the warranty.
Great! They used quality SKF's. Took an hour and a half and I was on my way.
So cruising back home and aproach the intersection where I...
