I have a 2001 explorer sport and my rear diff is leaking right at the pinnon seal. I don't know how long it has been like this but it is pretty bad. It is all over the bottom, gas tank, diff, and drive shaft. When I park it for more than a few days, a puddle forms. Is it serious or should I get...
I have a 2003 Explorer Limited, 4.6L AWD 3.73 LS rear.
As many others have experienced I also have noise from the rear. Although mine isn't quite the same as what others have posted in these forums. I do not have a whine noise that comes on around 35mph and disappears at 60. Mine sounds...
So i have a 99 explorer sport v6, 4.0 OHV, 160,000 miles. Two weeks ago i went out to drive it and as I started driving I immediately had no power at all. When i hit the gas pedal it would barely even move, especially going up hills, and the car would shake a little. But when i shift in...
I'm having issues with my 2002 Explorer 4WD 4.0L -- it started with a slight "humming" noise from the front end...can start to hear it at about 20 mph and gets really loud at 30-40 mph -- then seems to go away after about 50 mph. Here's what I have checked/replaced:
1. First, really thought...
Hey everyone, I'm wondering if I can install a limited slip diff in my 2000 XLT from a donor truck of the same year. It has an open differential at the moment, axle code 45. My friend's 04 Sport Trac has a D2 and that thing will power through almost anything in 2WD. I'm just wondering how...
I have a 2002 Explorer Sport 2 door and I am trying to figure out if it has an open differential or a limited slip diff. The door tag is kind of faded so I couldnt see all the codes on it but I did look at the rear diff and the tag on it says this.

I have a 93 4x4 Ex. I did a search already and haven't found much info so... It sounds like its Winding up/down when i go faster or slow down. Bearings and a few other things have been checked/fixed i just had the rear differential rebuilt. The noise was there before it was rebuilt and still...
Hi Guys,
I’m reading for quite some time in this forum and found some very useful tips, video and photo tutorials. Thanks very much for all your posts
Anyway, now I have a problem where I’m stuck and can’t find anything, neither here nor anywhere else.
I’ve got a ’97 Explorer XLT...
I put this thread in the Zuke forum because I don't believe Chev made any of this thing really.
Anyway, 2000 Chev Tracker 4dr, 4wd, 5 speed 130,000 kms.
4 wheel drive hasn't worked for a short time, I hadn't had the time to figure out why but today I noticed that while driving in 2wd there...
I have an explorer with electric 4WD and auto-locking hubs. When switching to 4WD, whether High or Low, the dummy light on the dash comes on, but the front axle never gets power.
The engine turns the front drive shaft whether in 2WD or 4WD, but the axle doesn't get power. From this...
I have a 93 Ford Aerostar, going down the Freeway at anything over 55, I get a high pitched noise. I replace the front bearing on both side of the front axle. I am not sure however if it is the rear axle bearing or something in the differential. The noise does not change with coasting or...
Hi guys. Got an unusual situation here.
Today I took my 96 Explorer in for the front bearing/hub replacements that my dealer offered to do under the warranty.
Great! They used quality SKF's. Took an hour and a half and I was on my way.
So cruising back home and aproach the intersection where I...
New here - sorry if this has been covered. It's an AWD 4.6L. When the vehicle first starts up and I drive it, it runs and turns perfectly with no issues. This lasts for about 20 minutes. After driving it a while it will shudder and shake when I turn the wheels more than 20 degrees or so...
Hello everyone!
My friend's 2000 Mountaineer (same as explorer of that year, right?) blew the front differential on a road trip and instead of spending the 1000 the mechanic says it will cost to replace it, I was thinking we could just remove it and make it a 2wd vehicle.
I read on this...
On my 1995 explorer I have a whining noise coming from the rear. I have read around seeing that people have had trouble with their rear differentials. I decided to change my rear differential oil with more thicker oil. 85w-140 to be exact. It made no difference what so ever. Anyone have any idea...
Hello,
My name is Ilyushin Yakovlev, I'm 17 years old and I live in Valparaiso, Indiana. This is my first post on the explorer forum (or any online forum for that matter), so please forgive me if I've missed this information elsewhere in a previous post.
First let me say that I am...
Hey this is my second post. I have a 93' xlt explorer m/t with a 4.0L. I recently purchased this truck and it may have a slight leak of tran fluid, and the exhaust is destroyed, so i need to replace it. It has auto locking hubs for 4x4 and low range. Well when i click the 4x4 button, it...
I wanted to share my experience with upgrades I recently made to my 1999 V6
Ford Eddie Bower Explorer. I got stuck in the snow recently and only two wheels
turned - the left front and the right rear. This did not seem like "true" 4wd to me.
Up to this point, the vehicle was completely stock...
Ok so I tried sifting through the site to find what I need, because I'm sure it's on here, however I've come up dry.
Here is the deal. New to me truck. Looks like the maint has been immaculate, it's sat for about 5 mo. on a dealer lot so when I get in and drive it and it shifts late and hard...
I have discovered that my rear differential vent hose is broken, before it gets up to it's mounting location. Vehicle is 1997 XLT 4.0 SOHC, 8.8" 3.73 LS. My questions are: where should this hose terminate, and how could I obtain a replacement end fitting. Thanks in advance.
Mike
My 1996 Aerostar has an electronic 4WD. Recently while making left or right hand turns while slowing down to about 15mph to turn the front end makes a violent jumping/popping/thumping which shakes the front end. After inspection of the front end we noticed a bracket was broken which connects...
ive been seaching around this site trying to find a decent write up on the removal and replacement of a rear differential on a 99 explorer and i cant find one... so anyone got any info on it???
I'm buying a 99 4x4 explorer with 100,000 miles this weekend and it needs a new rear diff. obviously...
The good stuff starts at 1:50, but its remarkable how they start with simple tinkertoys and build up a modern differential. A must see if you are not sure how a diff works. Good science project for kids in school too!
Used this forum to to troubleshoot rear end whine, so I replaced the fluid on my differential. Used Royal Purple which has the anti slip additive, however do not think I have anti slip. Could this harm anything?

The whine has gotten progressively louder since...
The bolted on tag that IDs the differential type is gone. I already tried calling ford, but they do not have the information since its a 97. Any help identifying which rear diff i have would be greatly appreciated.

Finally got round to having someone look at the whine on my ex. They took it for a quick test drive and have diagnosed either the diff or transfer box. There wasn't a ramp free for a proper look so couldn't determine which.
He told me to cut my losses and het rid of her but I dint really want...
Hello to all. I've looked through many posts on this site and found a lot of great info, but nothing exactly like my problem.
02 Mountaineer with 4.6, 5R55W trans, towing pkg. 100,000 miles on the odometer, purchased used at 80,000 so I do not know the service record on it. Diff has a slight...
My 94 Ford Ranger has a "clunk" in the rear end. thought it was Trans, and then the drive shaft but now see it is in the differential. Is there any adjustments inside or does one replace the whole rear end?
Has anyone had any luck getting the rear diff whine fixed for less than $1200? I had a wheel bearing replaced, that didn't work. Also, put the synthetic oil in and that didn't work. Any other ideas?
I can live with it if it costs $1200 for the ring & pinion, but wasn't sure if there were...
Nice long title huh?
Ive got a 2002 EB with 99,500miles on it.
A few weeks ago I noticed a slight vibration and rumbling noise coming form the rear-end while turning and accelerating from a complete stop. Making a left turn at a light or pulling out of a driveway into traffic for example...
I watched the video on how to change differential fluid, but the part that got only momentary mention was adding the new fluid. I have a 2002 AWD Mountaineer. It appears the fill plug is right above the larger drain plug. Having the spare tire in the way doesn't help.
What's the best trick...
I have a 2002 XLT - I just had a new differential and transfer case installed because the 4WD was getting false signals to engage, but wouldn't engage all the way - so I felt a tugging/bumping when I accelerated to about 45 mph. Anyway those parts got trashed, and had to be replaced. I can stop...
I am still new to this forum, but am looking for some insight. I have searched up and down and the answer seems to be the Transfer Case. But just wanted to post and get some feedback. The front end of my 1996 4.0L Explorer binds and pops very loud when in 4 wheel drive high while turning (esp...
I have an '04 Explorer XLT AWD V6 with 43K miles on it. I bought it from Carmax with 21K miles on it just over a year ago. It has always had an annoying problem. From time to time it seems to get stuck in a rut. I always assume it's a transmission problem. While on the highway it seems to...
I've been wanting to suprise my pop with a locking rear diff since his truck at work (2006 Dodge Dakota 4x4) has one.
I've been doing a lot of research and needing 4WD for much of the things he does is overrated, he does off roading, just not anything that you'd need full blown 4WD. I have...
Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and SUV ownership. With first child on the way, I decided to buy a sport utility, and what better than a Ford? I purchased an '04 Mercury Mountaineer from an auction claiming the vehicle had a "slight grinding at the front left wheel, and ABS light on"...
I have the ohv and ive had this issue for a while now. when i apply anymore than 3/4 throttle the floor/pedal/shifter vibrates. not too too bad but very noticeable driving. Could it be the tranny?? its a the 5 speed manual. Ive never changed the fluid....spark plugs have also never been changed...
