So I'm really ignorant when it comes to vehicles, truly. So please understand that before I ask stupid questions! I can do the basics like change my oil etc but am lost when it comes to anything advanced.

So basically my reverse went out about a month ago. I've got about 150k miles on it, and there was absolutely zero warning.

From what I understand, I'm basically expecting a transmission rebuild for 2-3k. I just want to know if anyone could possibly give me some advice on how I can't inspect the issue myself before I go to someone who wants my $$. $Money$ I don't have. It drives just fine in every gear, it's just the reverse! I'm a student right now and can barely afford rent let alone paying for a car inspection.

Thanks for any advice, guys!

I feel your pain brother. 07, soleniod burn out gears missing and no reverse.

I've read that adding a can of Sea foam Transmission Treatment can help??

Just that time, been a good ride. 3rd explorer have had to fix tranny before on one of my others

the reverse gear is the last thing inside the tranny closest to the tail.... on my 98 the reverse band dog ear broke off and because everything has to come out it will cost the same as a full rebuild so it was better to push it until it blew up for good.... there are a few things that can cause reverse to not function but the reverse band is the most common in my experience.... saddly enough there is no way to know unless you pull it all apart.... reverse band is like a $20 part with a 2k price tag

I am assuming you have v6 model. The reverse band on the 5r55s is a notorious problem, it's just snaps without warning. I just replaced the whole tranny on my 07, lost reverse at 116k miles.
