i have a 94 explorer sport 2wd 4.0L and I was wondering whether the 2wd would be good enough to do a little off roading, not rock crawling or anything but but like a pre runner. if not i think ill just drop it. thanks for the help reply soon

Yeah it would be great, I'm planning on doing to same with my 4dr yours should be better cause its smaller. 91-94 Explorers have I beams up front very strong and great for prerunners.

The 2wd's are pretty good offroad, no matter what you do. They obviously won't ever have the capabilities that a 4wd has, but with a locker in the back, some 33s+, and a decent lift, you can go quite a few places. Clearance is the biggest thing. If you have the clearance (obv. keep you from getting hung up in many places) you will be able to continue going through whatever it is you're doing. j602 has about 8-9in of lift and 35s, as well as a no-slip locker in the rear. From what I've heard, he can do a pretty good amount with his truck. Same with boominXplorer. He has a Mounty with 10" of lift and 35s and w/ the help of his nice 5.0, he's able to power his way through a lot of stuff. Like I said before, it won't ever have the capabilities of a 4x4, but when it's setup right, it can do a pretty nice amount of stuff.

A 2wd with a locker is better than a 4wd open diffs fron and rear. You're in "The OC". There are a ton of shops that can help you out with what you want. Gopher on here has Fabtech beams and extended radius arms with 4" lift with 35s. What city in OC are you?

There are plenty of built 2wd explorers out there, your in the OC you probably see em all the time. I know down here in SD there are probably 7 or 8 I can think of off the top of my head. There are tons of fab shops all over up there take your pick. For more info on 2wd scene go over to www.dezertrangers.com
Here are a couple links to get you started. These are A arm explo's, but you get the idea...
Clicky here
and here
I have a 94 2wd sport I'm building right now, I'll post up some pics if you give me a min.

First 3 or 4 are my '94' sport in progress, rest are random built explo's
I'll be dumping the coils, buckets, and king 2.5's for custom beams and c/o's shortly if anyone is interested in them.

I live in lakeforest a small city right beside irvine. thanks for the help

Right on Jason.  did he give you about the same price as what i said? as far as steering goes he is just welding up some extenders. he said that i should consider a drop pitman arm but see how it drives with out it first. you can see the extenders in the pic of the ranger you posted. and yes it should float like a caddy with the c/o's :D :D .

i was planning on going King, but Guy said you have to get the Race series, (very expensive) not the Prerunner series. other wise he said that the Sway a Way Race Runners were a better shock than the Prerunner series. Something to do with the Kings having a plastic bushing and the SAWs having a metal one. he said the plastic one fails real fast. i dunno where its at on the shock or what. cant remeber. email him and ask him.

but anyways im going with SAWs, like he said. they are cheaper than the King Prerunner series anyway. my truck will be done a week from this sunday so ill def send u pics when im done.

btw i PMed you on Dezert rangers

sorry to jack the thread

I used to live there. Lake forest and Dimension behind the Weinerscniztel (before it was there)

Damn I miss the OC some times. especially the trucks!

another good thing about the 2wd beam explorers is how much wheel travel you can get without a whole ton of custom fabbing and how cheap they are to build

2wd long travel = EL cheapo when compared to 4wd long travel for sure!

depends on your fab skills and your definition of "el cheapo"... :D ...lol

nope because if you compare it to the same setting up a 4wd its still cheap, meaning say you pay Camburg tfor a 2wd kit and install, then take that total and pay camburg for a 4x4 kit and install.
2wd = much cheaper.

i have a 92 sport 2wd with 4" of lift, a powertrax no slip, 3.73's & 31" BFG's. It does well off road, has good on road manners, & doesn't use a lot of gas. Usually if i'm going to get stuck off road (not that i wheel it often), it is in a spot that most stock 4x4's can't get through. It is also nice because stuff doesn't break on it. No transfer case, front axle, etc etc to damage; it is more reliable offroad. Granted, i always wish for 4x4 and would rather it that way, but you've got to roll what you've got.

Absolutly 2wd 91-94 exploder as a pre-runner. i did mine up and just took second at the Truckin Nationals Tough Truck competition!!! Just parts you can bolt on pluss a small bit of fab work and these trucks are golden!
