The suspense is killing us

How far can the valve/s open before valve spring "bind" occurs?

'

Everything is fine!
I have the pushrods and rocker arms all re installed, then my torque wrench broke… seriously it broke at 20 ft lbs? What a pile of crap. I have 4 other torque wrenches, 2 huge ones 1/2 drive and 2 tiny 1/4” drive, inch pound ones that do not do 18-24 ft lbs (280 inch lbs)

So this am I am off to get a new torque wrench

The stock pushrods fit much better no clearance issues to rocker arm
I checked torque/ lifter Preload on a few cylinders. Pedestal Mount rockers so it goes like this:
Bring cyl 1 to the base circle of the cam (both valves closed, damper timing mark points to 0)
Finger tight rocker arm until zero Lash is achieved.
Now with torque wrench bring rocker to 18-24 ft lbs. I did 20.
It should take 1/4 to 1 full turn to hit torque. It did.
If it takes less you need shorter pushrods or pedestal shims. If it takes more then a full turn you need longer pushrods or remove material from bottom Of pedestal.
Big shock, with factory lifters, pushrods, rocker arms this valvetrain went perfectly. Each one 20 ft lbs took 1/2 turn of the Bolt.
This tells you proper lifter pre load is achieved and your pushrods are correct length
After this torque each of the 16 rockers to 24 ft lbs with cam on base circle for that cyl
Done

I worked my way through all 16 valves and rockers. 1/4 turn of the damper, follow the firing order and repeat on each cyl. I did it twice. And during final torque my wrench broke?!! Sheesh two cylinders left to check

So in 1 hour when harbor height opens I’m headed to get a new 3/8 torque wrench

I also cut open the oil filter and took a sample of the oil. All checks out… nothing but oil. Oil filters are thin metal, like pop can thin, I like this new cutter tool should be handy!

Also pulled the plugs, they look ok… but I’m replacing them anyways

Cleaned the snot out of the valvetrain and head. Cleaned up all
Sealant. Checked each valve stem seal, inspected every spring and retainer. Looks good

All 16 rocker arms and pedestals inspected and cleaned, re lubed

I found his factory pushrods and soaked them in oil last few days

Each rocker assembly and pushrod were carefully inspected, cleaned and re assembled carefully. Paying attention to the rotation of the pedestal mount to rocker arm and putting each pushrod back in the same orientation (you can tell which side was lifter and which was rocker arm)

With a valve at half lift all the angles look good and the sweep of the rocker tip on the valve stem looks good. I have lots of clearance between pushrod and rocker arm with valve fully open… not like before
I fully expect this to work

Now with what I have learned in the last few days it will be fun to convert one of these to roller tipped 1.6 or 1.7 rockers as with these stamped stock setup we are for sure leaving some performance on the table. The stock stamped rockers measure from 1.4-1.5 or so… not the 1.6 we were hoping for (cam is designed for)

Two options for running roller rockers on these pedestal Mount heads… okay well 3

Option 1: $500 set of rocker rockers made for pedestal Mount
Option 2: machine the heads to accept adjustable stud mount type rockers. Then you can run $150+ rollers of your choice
Option 3: conversion kit, crane cams used to make a kit allowing you to convert pedestals to studs… crane went out of business. Not sure if anyone else (trick flow) still makes similar? Ran out of time to continue research

Any one of these options you will need to shim the pedestals or adjust studs and likely need longer pushrods, you will have to check valve train geometry.
I ordered some tools that will make my life easier when it comes time to do this

Remember my sport trax has been running around for 20k miles now with pushrods hitting rocker arms, so I will have to fix that truck too

I’m putting engine back together this am with fingers crossed that I don’t still have a collapsed
Lifter… I doubt it as all pushrods were tight… they were Just striking the rocker arms

Where I stopped last night
4 rocker arms left to check… right now they are torqued to 20 ft lbs..

Crazy weekend my mother in
Law tore her acl (poor thing) wife spent much time getting her to er via ambulance

I have new valve cover and intake gaskets ready to go, should be running by mid morning… fingers crossed!

Oh and I re torqued both headers…
Man oh man with the valve covers off and rocker arms out of the way the header
Bolts are Easy to get at. Very helpful to have a topside creeper for these repairs

POS “old” 3/8 torque wrench is wall art now… along with some lightly used comp 6.3 pushrods

All my relatives are in laws, I'm an outlaw. Any leg injury is brutal, the older you get, the longer it takes to heal. I woke up one morning a few years ago to a dead leg. Got out of bed to fall face first to the floor. It took 3 months to walk again, doctors couldn't find anything wrong.

What the heck? Couldn’t find anything wrong? It just self healed? Man I get a weird
Lump and they want to ekg and mri every limb… seriously I have a cyst on my wrist is getting removed had to have an mri last week… who the hell invented that thing, aliens? Sounded like I am the rocker arm,
It’s just a simple cyst!! (I hope)

I'm curious as to how all of this could work out however keeping the stock dimension of the valve cover/s.
So many times on old Ford 302s, adjustable rocker arms get added, etc. then a too tall valve cover is required...

I had scans done, specialists looked at it. I couldn't control the knee or anything below it. 3 months on crutches so looking at that picture of her on the stretcher is painful cause it'll be awhile to get back to normal. It also made me more aware of ADA accessibility, especially around the house

Yep snowballs
The few I have done with roller rockers required mustang valve covers with the baffles removed or a tall set of eBay tog welded aluminum rocker covers… and then you have to modify the pcv and oil fills.
Intake spacer helps with clearance, which means modified coil Tower Tripod… snowballs

This engine is to be reliable and tough… later down the road we can upgrade to a stroker then this 302 can go into a bronco ii… more snowballs

This will be tough on her and all of us. She is in her late 70s and already cares for her husband whose health is failing. Lucky we have much family here and town is small, so
Somebody always nearby to help

Harbor freight opens at 9 on Sundays …. Extra hour to wait!

You've got the wrong doctor. I have a tiny lump on my wrist, since Spring, and last week in a normal appointment I pointed it out to him. He said leave don't doing anything about it, leave it alone for now. I touch it almost every day to see if it changes, it's an annoying tiny bump.

My niece had the same thing, it was ruled ( dis assocation motor syndrome) , for some reason your brain will just turn off body parts. Stress related

Something I'll have to look into. Thanks for the info.

@410Fortune I thought that you had swapped to the 2-wire camshaft position sensor?

You have it backwards
The Holley works best with the 3 wire 96-97
My engine was 99-00
Now I have a brand new motorcraft 2 wire cam synchro in the box

All lifters pumped up things are looking good

Nope
Still noisy

Runs better no more smoke but still knock knock knock

More tests tomorrow
Compression, scope cylinders, etc
Looking at all options
I have a few engines around here will do what is needed as best I can
