can a holley control the amount of fuel i used per individual cylinder? yes and no. a terminator, no. dominator, yes because i just asked that same question a few weeks ago with my tuner.
running on a wizard tune to me is not great idea. might get away with it if your close to stock, but i myself wouldnt. then again, im a tad past stock. that oil doesnt look to great, i do think your right, it was saturated with fuel. mine looked like that more then once trying to get it to run (did around 5 oil changes before it even started). as for tuners, you pretty much have to be a bonehead to blow up a motor but then again remote tuners can only tune to what they read on a screen, right? if there is a false reading from one or more sensors, they are going to think that is the correct reading and go with it. i had a vacuum line that got melted and didnt catch it. when i found it, they had to scrap everything and start fresh (not sure if they were happy about that or not, but never said anything to me). dono did all my tuning when i had my proracer package, as well his own and never had any major issues. i will say that it may have been both tuner and mechanical issues that did it in sorry to say.

what did the spark plugs look like that came out of the 5.0 look like 4 to 5 years ago? Did you have the opportunity to look at the cylinder walls with a scope or heads removed? Back then too? I would have to go back to early posts in this project to see if I have the timeline near correct.
EDIT: I see now in post #17 the spark plugs that you installed at 99K.

Yes the goo is grey in color

Yes there was oil in the intake and the intake gaskets were tiny bit wet when I removed them… a first for me
The motorcraft pcv valve is also stuck (no rattle when shook)
running it with bad cyl likely ruined pcv system = bye bye crankcase oil
or
Oil consumption leads to lean leads to broken lam?
So many possibilities here

Yes if the heads off the 104k engine before it went into eddie truck
I inspect every 5.0 on the stand, it was in perfect running condition
Yes I did a full tune up on that engine at 99k, the kid totaled it at 104k and I bought the whole rolled explorer back from them

Today I am prepping the new power plant and may get it dropped in there today

Eddie scored a backup vehicle yesterday something he has been wanting for a while and something he can drive to work daily
1988 bronco ii for a good price, it quit running on the lady he bought it from. After he bought it and had it towed he sent me pics…. It’s already a 4.0!!!
He was expecting a 2.9… what a score

The oil in the intake explains the blue smoke it had.

Saga continues
Missed this before when I removed the cam
Cam gear has a piece missing

Could this piece have gone through cyl 1? If so how would it get on top of the piston

Anywho this could be the culprit
Was a new in box timing set Cloyes

Fail due to bad casting? Or when d shaft left go?
We may/will never know

This is where the broken bit would have been riding in the engine

Timing cover side of cam bearing inside the cam retainer ring
Not sure is can enter the intake in cyl one from there

SON OF A BI$^%&

no movement allowed if you look its not a piece that rides against the pin, its purely cosmetic / structural

Looks like a casting flaw. I've seen the alignment dowel sheer off at the cam before that gear breaks.

Builder block put in temp storage
Poor thing only around 110k and two trucks!
Just a baby

Now up the new power plant
2000 153k I drove this donor truck before I crushed it. This engine is clean…. Has sat in my shop for a bit now (waiting for a good cause)

Now to build it up, first I have to strip It down.
Block was mounted on the stand, dusted off, oil pan removed, rotating assembly lubed, she feels and looks great

Now that’s how a pickup screen should look

Pan looks proper! No excessive carbon this is a good looking 302
All bores silky smooth, can see all the crosshatching,
I’m happy
Will do compression test once it’s under the hood just because

IMG_3421.jpeg

Lots of work to do before I can drop it in
Lots of cleaning and installing new gaskets
New felpro everything including head gaskets and bolts, new valve seals, new melling double roller timing set (this time)
New plugs, new remflex tmh gaskets and then go time

Truck will need a re tune just to be safe
Yes I am re using cam and springs
Yes I am using factory pushrods this time

bolt a starter to the shim plate, and crank it on the stand for what its worth. while your there do a leak down.

thats my .14 of a cents (after the canadian to us conversion)

Well it’s not extra, im covering all of this
The tows, the repairs, the parts, fluids labor, etc. I plan to provide what I was paid to provide
I mean it’s not like I make a ****load of money off these Builds I do it mostly for the love of the game
But Eddie is like family to us, I would do the same for you too!
Now if this engine goes lean and loses a cylinder I am out… hahahaha and I have made that clear.
It’s okay I will make enough money off Eddie on the next two projects we have planned to make up for this loss..

My big problem right now is (time) my trailer is toast… it needs new shackles at the minimum before I put another truck on it and I just lost the trans in my 7.3 excursion (247k miles)
My big shop truck (97 f350) is on borrowed time too the cab needs body mounts badly and the engine has been running on 7 holes for about 10 years now, lots of leaks, leaking injectors, it really needs some work before I go towing anything to Seattle
Also I don’t have 4wd in the sport trac… I gotta rebuild the front d shaft and I need to rebuild the carb in my plow truck mount the plow and chains… snow is coming very very soon

I Like the idea of doing compression test on the stand!! I should have removed the flexplate

I’m an open book and I pull no punches when it comes to trucks. Eddie knows all of this
Remember what started all this back in the 90s was I inherited a bronco ii from my dad ($500) and it needed work, I got screwed by a Midas shop and started thinking I better get books and my own tools because if you want it done right…. Well I stand behind my work, the reason I build trucks is it’s the only way to not get screwed by a shop

That's a beautiful looking 302. I agree with doing the compression test, a cylinder leak down test would be a good 2nd choice.

You dudes are silly you can leave the comments they are funny. Eddie knows everything that’s going on here

We're not in any way trying to laugh or joke at the situation itself. You are doing a good job standing behind your work. I admire that you put it all out here, in real time for all of us to see and give opinions on. That's how you earn a customer for life!

It’s my internet legacy! You may not know
My face but you know my trucks!!
