Its definitely different. Its very quiet, just a deep mellow sound. I'll try to get a video of interior noise tomorrow while driving. It is so weird- the exhaust can't be heard from the drivers side at idle, but under acceleration it sounds nice. I wasn't used to it and looked to my passenger side while driving to see who was driving beside me.
It feels like I have a little more low end, but that could be placebo effect too. You know you do a mod and you "feel" the results regardless, but I think it helped.
This guy is top notch- he bolted the rear hanger on the frame instead of welding it. He bent and cut the rod on the hanger before he welded it up too. His welds are almost as smooth as the factory welded seams on the muffler and he bent the tailpipe up very quickly. I will never go to anyone else for muffler work, his shop is a 45 minute drive, but well worth it. This is the same guy who bent and welded on the tubes on my sliders.
It sounds dramatically different than it did before, a much deeper, more mellow tone- my camera takes crappy audio, it doesn't do it justice. I am going to take a video while driving tomorrow- maybe that will let everyone hear what I hear.
Jamie: My X has almost the exact same pipe arrangement as your X. In particular from the pre-cats to the muffler. These are aluminized steel. The muffler is an aluminized Dynomax for a big block GM that is similar to Jon's with dual 2 1/2" inlets and a single 3" outlet. My 3" diameter tailpipe is aluminized steel and comes out just below the rear bumper with about the last 12" in SS tube. The exit has a 45 degree cut similar to the way factory pipes are cut to allow ground clearance. I think the 45 cut also attenuates the exhaust a bit, takes some of the pop out of it under hard acceleration and mellows it out without quieting it. I should really get you guys some pictures.
Its been a little bit now, and the muffler has broken in a little- I love it! It sounds so good while going down the road, I drive with the windows cracked just to hear it. Initially it was a little louder than I wanted, but I like it now. Its quiet at idle, sounds good when accelerating, then levels out to a nice tone, not drone on the highway. It sounds plain mean wide open.

I just found this thread. You have the EXACT same MagnaFlow muffler I have except mine is 2 1/2 in. inlet and dual 2 1/4 in. outlet and then I reveresed it so it's dual 2 1/4 in. inlet and single 2 1/2 in. out. MagnaFlow part #12258. I got Torque Monster headers and my 2 lower cats removed. Here's what mine sounds like:
Sorry no pics of exhaust yet, I know I need to get some. Try going to www.putfile.com then go to search. Under keywords type Torque Monster. You'll see a video of a black Mountaineer. Once you find that video click on my name "madmike783" and you'll see my take off video also.
