haha sorry bro had to put my muffler on before the police caught wind of me

well i finally finished the muffler today it looks badass coming out the side

but damn does my tailpipe get hot! i freakin burned my finger today when touching it. i guess the stock cats and muffler kept the exhaust cooler than a straight through muffler and no rear cats

sound clips in the morning

sorry it took so long to get a clip I was busy with school and work, but here is a clip sounds pretty good, I love the drone, haha

sounds bad ass

What kinda system would be recommended to keep the famous low end of the X, but increase mileage and sound badass? i got all stock now

Recommended setup?

Stock 1999 5.0 AWD. Only modification is a MAC Cold Air Intake Kit. Which exhaust system would you recommend? A cat back kit? Replace the muffler only? Please let me know your opinion!

To the two new members who posted tonight looking for opinions....have you read this entire thread, clicked on the Youtube vids etc?

LOTS of good info in here.

At the end of the day, most muffler choices will perform well. It comes down to sound. Only YOU can tell what sounds good to you.

In addition to the air intake, consider SCT custom tuning and Torque Monster Headers. All these mods work very well together. TONS of info in the archives to search for.

Good luck.

I bought a Dynomax catback for my 5.0. It's not a real blatter but has a nice little growl to it. If you want something really loud this isn't the one. This one is just about right where you don't have to worry about being pulled over if you step on it..

so i just got my magnaflow installed (muffler only, kept stock pipes), and im some what disappointed. its not nearly as loud as i had thought. whats something i can do to make this baby purr even louder without spending a bunch of money? thanks.

Did you remove the resonator? That will make a difference.

no i did not..what exactly is the resonater and how much would it cost to remove it?

It's the cylinder thing attached to the rear, after the muffler, on the exhaust. It just provides extra sound dampening. To remove you'll need to cut it off, and weld back a piece to replace it. Easiest thing would be to check with your local exhaust shop as far as pricing goes.

ok i see it! :/ well i have a magnaflow with 2.25 dual in and 2.25 single out to stock tip. when i go to the muffler shop should i just have them cut it out and weld me a whole new tip? even tho its 2.25 out would making a bigger pip out of the muffler make it louder?

I say leave cats, and straight pipe all the way back and use a 2.5" or 3" tip... People love mine and sounds killer. Not loud inside either.

I sure miss that sound. best exhaust I have ever had.

ok ive read all of the posts and kinda figure out what i want tekman05 helped alot with my decision just want to know how much of a difference does a tip actually make and how to choose which one to use. and whats the difference with 2 in 1 out centered to offset?

i dought i will afford the Monster headers any time soon but go with delete rear cats and 40 series and resonator. if sell those cats to metal yard i pretty much come out even on the setup

Strictly discussing exhaust systems and not going over 2.5" pipes; if i want to add a little bit more low end power (torque) and possibly gain a bit more mpg's should I:

A. keep stock muffler
B. install aftermarket muffler of my choice
C. Install muffler of my choice and keep the rear cats
D. Remove resonator and keep everything stock
E. Don't touch the exhaust, install an electric fan instead
F. Other _____________________________

To help you decide on your answer, here's what i have/installed:

-1997 5.0 v8
- 1" phenolic upper intake spacer
- k&n cone filtercharger kit
- torque monster headers
- 89 tune from James
- manual 4406
- stock size tires
- stock exhaust system after the TMH (4 cats, stock muffler and resonator)

preferred muffler: 70 series dual in single out (i do not want anything louder. stock is already quite loud when you step on it).

What do you all think? I'd really hate to lose what low end power my truck has. I mean right now, even with all the mods you can step on it and it will downshift and the engine would scream and the truck would accelerate in a relaxed manner. Sort of like "sounds nice but doesn't really do much" kind of deal. For a very old engine on a heavy truck, I don't expect it to go like a bat out of hell and have no intention of racing it in any way. :D

So, torque and MPG's. Will changing some/all components of the remaining stock section of my exhaust be worth the trouble or just keep it stock?

Here are a couple of vids for you viewing pleasure, the first one is just sitting at idle with a quick rev, and the 2nd one was a launch under load. Exhaust is just my headers, and the first pair of cats the exhaust is cut out after them. I'll upload a couple more tonight with my cutouts, and the 50 series flowmaster, when I get it in.

Wow, no muffler and just two cats? That's not as loud as I would have expected. The front cats must do more than we'd like them to. I'll fix that later on mine.

That's alot like how mine sounds now. Eric, did you swap the TMH's on your new truck? And I bet some Hi-flow Cats would really waken up the exhaust even more. Sounds and looks good. Glad to see you getting things going again!

The video didn't capture it well, but it's pretty loud, the cats a quieting it a little but not to much. If I put my foot in it a little it drowns out the radio if it's cranked all the way up. I wouldn't want it any louder. Its quiet if I'm just coasting down the road, just a little rumble.

Edit: yes I have my headers on.
