I have a 97 Mercury Mountaineer and my stock subwoofer died on me. No one seems to know what size it is. I believe it is either a 6.5" or 8" Can anyone confirm? Can either or fit? or Only one size will fit. If it is a 6.5" where is the best place to buy one. Also how can I confirm it is indeed the speaker and not the amp. I get no sound at all from it.

I think the metal insert in the grill cover is approximately the size the sub is...

Ok...now i have 3 possibilities....
Is there anyway to find out without opening it?

I dunno if its 6 inch 6.5 inch or 8 inch

it just snapps off.....

Unless you take the whole side panel off, the speaker grill will not come off without breaking something.

These tabs are on the back of the grill...

This is how they hold the speaker grill on...

You might be able to remove the metal grill in the speaker grill. That is only "wedged" into the opening.

BlackPeaceStone...I used a butterknife to remove my grill. I slid it in at the top right corner and slid it around in the crack until I felt a tab and I then just gently pushed the knife up until the tab released. Once you get a couple of tabs released you can see down behind the grill and tell where the other tabs are or you can see the size of the speaker. Mine was 8" on my 2001 Limited.

I was told by the Ford Dealership that my amp was blown. I decided to fix it myself and I bought a new amp. I had already checked all the wiring and tested the woofer so I knew they must have been right. So, I bought a new amp and the woofer still had no sound. I checked the wiring all the way back to my headunit and it turned out to be a blown diode burnt half into inside the back of the headunit. Friend sold me his unit for 15 bucks now everything is working better than ever.

I finally took it out and it measured 6.5" Anyone ever heard of a 6.5" sub? I hope its not the amp....Anyway to be sure its the sub and not the amp?

I don't have the factory stereo anymore so that test wont work for me.

Ok I tested the sub with a multimeter and it was dead....But then i tried to replace it with another 6.5" speaker to see if i get any sound and I dont. I tried 3 different new 6.5" speaker.

Is there any other way to troubleshoot this? Also there is a small white box that is attached to the subwoofer case. I opened it up and its a circuit board. Anyone know what this white box is? And what is the silver thing next to the amp. Its a little bigger than the amp but I don't know what it is.

TheVarmit: u said you had a blown diode....Was it the factory radio that had the burnt diode or another radio?

Thanks Guys
