not to be an a$$ but there are several write ups on awd to 4wd conversions they will be pretty much the same except the addition of the front drive witch is easy to do it strait forward. im doing an m5od-r2 with a np205 swap on mine.

just google awd to 4wd and 2wd to 4wd here are a few

I am going to assume since the f150 shifter bolts to the explorer 4wd transmission, that the transmission will bolt to the engine fine. You might need a different torque converter, I am not sure on this.

I'm also assuming you would like to know if the 4wd transmission will bolt to a 2wd cross member. I think it will also work. You will need an explorer 4wd transmission mount though I bet.

What motor was that tranny on? If its out of the f-150 then no unless it was a 4.2 v6, im not even sure they offered that combo, that's the only bell housing that would bolt up to your 5.0 , but you do want the transfer case and its shifter and linkage and boot,

You could tear the two down and use the output shaft from the f150 trans in the explorer trans and then the same with the tail housing/ tcase adaptor.

But that won't be cheep

Your best bet would be just get a 4x4 explorer transmission. and yes the shifter will work with the body lift. well mine worked just fine.just had to cut the hole a little bigger. if the f150 you got the transmission out of is a v8 truck it will not bolt up. the bell housings are different.

Thanks Yall

Actually 97-01 f150 4.6 most came standard with 4r70w also some of the 5.4s came with it. TS(transmission) code U

if i replaced the output shaft id have to do a complete tranny rebuild not really worth the time.

this is your best bet. Then buy a transfer case.

yeah i think my best bet is find a 2nd gen ford explorer/ mercury mountaineer v8 AWD after 98, with a bad motor or any for cheap than swap all my new parts. and then add transfer case. and part out and scrap my truck.
