Another OHV M90 build

You switch to a 103 copper or just to the xp103 I bet james could add way more timing with out detonating and especially now you have w/m.but wouldnt rely on w/m.I would switch plugs and send him DL of step colder and one of w/m and maybe be like hey I've stepped down on plug temps now you may be able to add some more to the tune.:Dfrom what I read it makes a HUGE difference.

Nope tr6 is one step colder.thats in a copper though.add ix if you want iridium

Is your rig manual or auto trans? Curious as to how well the clutch handles the added power.

Auto trans.
Its been thru 2 rebuilds. Both of them were before the SC. So far, no issues with it.

I'm looking at replacing the fluid with Amsoil synthetic, a remote trans filter, and adjusting the bands this spring. I think I'll need to do anything I can to keep my 5r55e alive.

I have not had James do any tuning since the 422 cam went in, and have some stalling issues going in to reverse and very rarely in drive at idle. This must be why they don't recommend the 422 cam in an auto.

Spark plugs are a nightmare. Here's some cross references on a step cooler for our 4.0 ohv's.

NGK TR6ix (3689)
Denso VT20
Denso IT20
NGK TR6 (4177)
NGK ITR6F-13 (4477)
Autolite XP103 (FRM-XP103)
ACDelco 41-812
Champion E9204
If a vehicle needs to be used to find a plug, this plug is used in: Ford Focus 03-06 Engine Size /2.3L/140

2 Ranges Cooler (Range 7)
NGK TR7ix (3690) or Q7RTP-11
NGK BR7EF (stock number 3346)
Denso IT22 (Stock number 5327)
Motorcraft AWSFA-12C (Copper)
Autolite AR94

ebay...
4 NGK TR7IX IRIDIUM SPARK PLUGS STOCK#3690 FORD GT

Qty: 2

C $49.98

The only down side I read about is possible rough idle, and foulding if I drive like a grandma. I think I'll be ok.

I'll have 2 extra plugs, but the price was right. Shipping from Canada, so no crazy fees.

All suggestions are to go as cool of a plug as you can. If your having fouling issues, go one step hotter. Thats the advice, anyway. Trial and error.

Huh tr7ix???

Why do you keep getting random plugs?? Just get a set of tr6 or 103.tr6 are available from any store and are like $1something a plug....

The TR7's are 2 heat ranges cooler, so that's what I figured I'd start at. If I have added idle, or fouling issues, I'll go with TR6's. Its a bit of an experiment to see if they are too cold.
They are not he copper, but I'd like to give the longer life plugs a try since I'm driving for a minimum of 2 hrs a day.
Also, I guess I'm going to the wrong places, as places around here like to reference your vehicle and tell you what plug you need. When I tell them what plug I want, I get a blank stare and a response that they don't think you can do that (and they don't think they can find what I am looking for).

It seems spark plug selection has been so dumbed down its difficult to go to a store and tell them what plug you want. Also, TR6 and TR7 heat ranges are uncommon around here (believe it or not).

Gotca.figured it was a availability issue.I order all my plugs from advance auto online then have them ship to the store.I know exactly what you are talking about with the blank stare.haha if you cant ever get something up there just let me know, I can probably get it and gladly ship it to you no problem. Ill have to research the tr7.I've never heard of them and thought you was going a half step colder.was pretty drunk when i posted last night.haha.I run the br7ef but they are copper.I can change my plugs in a matter of minutes and whenever im driven my truck its 75% WOT all the time.at your levels and the level you plan on going to, I dont think your have an issue with two steps.if you have good success with them I may try them also.

Ya, were all learning. I'm interested in seeing how they work out.
Tim's coming by this weekend and were going to look at the other pulleys he has.

Good to hear your getting out for a few drinks.

Yea.I haven't been a fan of the iridium plugs because of my nos days.but looks like they have come a long ways.I may have to try them out.seems like you have to be very careful when you gap them tho.my tuner is the one that suggested the br7ef, but I also told him I planned on nos.it's also a nonprotruding tip

Work has been very stressful with all the military spending cuts..so definitely a drink was do!!

So, this leads to my next question.

With the hotter coil, should I stick with .035 gap? My instinct says 'yes'.

Here's a great/easy read:
http://www.superchargersonline.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=27

It explains the background behind what JD is saying.

Good read.didnt really say anything about gap and higher voltage coils so I assume it doesntmake a huge difference.thing to remember is we are running higher than stock compression so we should add about 2lbs of boost to what we really are running to equal their suggestions. Like they suggest two steps colder for 10+, well if we are running 8lbs its really like running 10lbs..the IX plug tips run hotter also so you really can get away with a colder plug.I'll be staying tune to see what your tr7 plugs look like, im really leaning towards running them also.
My plugs look perfect but I do sometimes get a slight stumple on a cold idle.but mine are also a race plug non protruding tip.think if I go to one that is a protruding tip and ix plug (slightly hotter) it may help.people are running the tr7 with 10:1 and 18ish pounds of boost and not having problems so we should be ok.good find:thumbsup: I thought all two steps colder was copper and a non protruding tip

hahaha....I was just looking back at the spanking you gave me a few posts back about always finding the weird ass plugs. Pretty funny.

Honestly, with the ones I'm using now, I don't know how I came up with them. I really thought I was going with a colder plug. I was obviously confused with all the cross referencing going on.

On a side note, I adjusted my water/meth flow rate curve up some more yesterday to see if I would have any stumbling. None, so I think I'll increase the ramp so it starts flowing max earlier.
I installed using a jet good for 300 horse(#5 jet), and set the spraying to start at 3lbs, and max out at about 15.
Now I set max spray at about 12. Now, Ill try max spray at 8-10lbs. This way the curve ramps up much faster.

I still haven't logged iat's to see what happening yet.

Haha hey I was drunk.I seen the post and was what the hell is a tr7 plug.just goes to show you,you can never do enough research.foot in the mouth for sure;)I even went outside when I got home to find my spare tr6 plugs, I was just going to send them to you.im just so use to all the copper plugs never really looked into the IX line.

Have you been running the 605 the whole time? I bet anything thats where your detention was coming from and why james was having a hard time tuning it out.I bet he had to take a lot of timing out and fine adjust it a lot.

Does the w/m seem to be adding any power or can you tell with a new tune? I bet its so cold up there that your iat temps are pretty low anyways this time of year. Summer will be the test, with a new tune..hahaa it never ends

With the old motor I was running TR6's.
I didn't see a point of using old plugs in a new motor, so I researched new plugs.
Problem is, I researched, and bought, the wrong ones.

I havn't been experiencing any detonation at all with the tune (Still tuned for the larger pulley), W/M, and the stock heat range plugs.

I'm hoping that once I settle on the pulley, plugs, and W/M spray curve, James will be able to re-tune and add a bunch more timing.

I can feel more power with the W/M for sure. After rounding a corner the other day I matted it and broke my winter tires loose (2wd w brown wire mod). Quite the rubber smell in the truck afterwards. I don't think that would have happened very easily before.

Just goes to show you how good his tunes are.bet he is going to set it loose once you get everything to the point you want!! Ill be waiting for the videos:Dgood to hear about the w/m and its safer:D:thumbsup: think in summer when temps are high is when your really going to feel it
