Anyone know how to make my 99 v6 fast?

These discussions/arguments crack me up. We're driving 10-15 year old SUVs that in reality are slow as molasses and could be spanked by 90% of the new vehicles out there.

Who cares if your V6 explorer can beat my V8 Explorer 0-60? Certainly not the 80 year old lady in the next lane that just blew past both of us in her Toyota Camry. No one is impressed but you. Girls panties aren't dropping 'cuz you just got to that next stop light before I did...

If you want a fast vehicle buy a real sports car and use the Explorer for what it does best - hauling **** and occasionally towing or going off-road.

End of discussion.

Exactly. Thank you...

I think they're quick..;) I love how the auto keeps the SOHC engines rev's between 5-6000rpm as it goes through the gears at WOT. Now no one can say that is "slow". Once I finish my engine rebuild I'm gonna post a 0-100+mph video on this thread.

Also I wanna see a SOHC go up against a 5.0 ohv on the quater mile. "The bullshit stops when the green flag drops".

Took my explorer to the track a few weeks after throwing in a new sohc into my explorer. My explorer is 4x4 with the brown wire mod, 4.10 gears stock and custom exhaust. Other than that no upgrades. I did 16.15 on the 1/4 mile at 84mph. I had a passenger, and a really frackin terrible reaction time. Also, for 4.10 gears the low end sucks! 1/8 mile time was 8.?? and the 1/8 to 1/4 mile was 6.??. So once you get going it pulls hard but off the light it isnt the best. They say for every 100lbs you drop you can get 1/10 of a second. Next time I go I'm going to go without a passenger and try for a better reaction time to see if I can get a 16 flat.

Guess what? Even with my best efforts, its still not what I would call fast.
Get a sports car, and for every dollar spent you will go way faster than me.

Please recheck your timeslip because I seriously doubt you ran 8.x.. in the 1/8. Heck, Turdle only ran a 9.3 in the 1/8 and that was with a 347 stroker, supporting mods and a 3000 stall. Also, reaction time has 0 affect on your ET;)

I can agree that if you want to go fast, you need to start with something fast and what is "fast" is different for all of us. Me, I just want to run consistent 14's and I'll be a happy camper:thumbsup:

For the speed devils out there, here's a section for us:D

Wow. This is funny and sad at the same time. There seems to be alot of pissy dudes on this one so I'll jump in. My 97 sohc with 4.10s dual exhaust brown wire cold air TB spacer on 31x 10.5 bfg ATS is quick. I spank alot of cars it prob. shouldn't be able to.... that said its not fast ...It pulls on up to 110 MPH real quick like but it takes me prob. about half a mile to get from 110 to 120 and that's all he's got. Dont ask about the limiters they are off . My goal after my 5.0 swap next week is to drop some coin over the next year and get as close to the jeep srt as I can. I know that's a tall order my buddy ran one with his 04 cobra that's modified and said that was the fastest truck or suv he ever ran!

There it is... In 'Need for Speed' we work pretty hard at pushing out trucks. Both with money and time. We have done a great job. I'd challenge anyone that wants to go fast with an Explorer to come on over and see what they can do.

Were happy to encourage. There's some pretty heavy hitters that have lots of resources to learn from in that section. I've learned tons. Come on over to the expensive side. :D

Limited: OOPS! you are correct. I am sorry. I don't know where I got the 8.?? from. My apologies. It was a hair over 10. Fast enough for me... in my big ole brick!

I doubt that if you would have modified the SOHC or 5.0L you wouldnt be saying that

Yes, he would be saying that. His Explorer is making so much more power than yours or mine is that it is pretty safe to say he knows what he is talking about.

I don't have an Explorer anymore :/ just sold her earlier in the week

I can't say how much power I'm making. I need to dyno, and take a rip down the quarter mile.

All in all, for the time and money I spent, I could be going way faster than I am.

Thanks Find! I appreciate your support. I'm not trying to pretend I am a speed demon, but I do want to be honest in what I feel my resuls are. Am I faster thqn any SOHC explorer naturally aspurated with basic mods? No question. Mascle car fast...No way.

Simple fact is to be muscle car fast, the Explorer is probably going to need to be upwards of $10,000 (probably closer to $15k) in motor work to run more than a few passes reliably. Fast is relative, but IMO, fast is at least somewhere sub 12 second quarters. Anything over 14 is ricer Civic fast (read: not fast).

Yup, when I get to the track for the street tune night, I only hope I line up against a civic.

He gets the last laugh as it cost me way more, but I'm certain I'll give him a run that he won't believe.

Guys, this forums great. I wouldn't have been able to pull off what I did without the help of some of the guys here. Im amazed that I'm not out looking for a new truck because I trashed my motor.

The education has been priceless for me here. I'r recommend modding your current vehicle to anyone, but you must learn with the help of others and do the work yourself. Otherwise, where's the satisfaction?

btw...What happened to the original poster? I think we scared him away with our banter.

Im out of the thread with appologies to the op.

FWIW, for under 10k, you can score a crate engine control pack (~1500) and a coyote 5.0 crate engine (~6000) from Ford Racing (well, one of their vendors)... Making it fit in an Explorer is another story though.

Bahahha this thread is sooo ridiculous! !there is a limitations on the 4.0 but as everyone has stated thats not what these trucks are made for.as dono said step over to the need for speed section if anyone wants to step up!!i KNOW for a fact i would smoke any stoock sohc or 5.0 explorer with me weighing in over 7000lbs and running 36x14.50!!!

I support the work that goes into making an Explorer fast but I wouldn't pretend that a few bolt ons will get one there. I'm glad I haven't listened to the negative things said about getting a Sport Trac on 35s. Without hearing the naysayers and the difficulties that would need to be overcome, it wouldn't have been nearly as satisfying. I'd love to see an Explorer go toe to toe with a Cherokee SRT. Tough ambition, but I think anyone that would accomplish that monster build would be extremely satisfied with the process and results. Those kind of projects are why I check this forum daily.

Thank you and I think I have a good shot with the direction im goin and the way im doing it in steps
