Betty's "I want to be a mule" progress log thread

Interesting, let me know how that works out. My truck has been in the 14mpg average range since I installed the heavy 18" wheels/tires. But I think it's also more than that, like the O2 sensors. Good luck,

I feel your pain there Jon, when i parked the Explorer while saving up for a front end rebuild is was getting 16-17 driving just to and from work, since i got her back on the road im getting 9.9 on the exact same drive. I think the mice that nested in the glove box ate some wires. Hopefully its throwing some new codes (check engine light has been on for 2 years due to a missing downstream o2 sensor) to make it a little easier to find the issue

Well, ol gal is slippin'.
What was great fuel economy has slowly deteriorated to less than 14mpg on the highway.
The average displyed "was" around 17.6 with MLB driving, slowly going down, I thought it was my imagination but after resetting the trip computer several times, we're at 13.8.

I'm guessing the 02 sensors are going kaput--however my gut tells me the cats could be clogged also. Poo. Going with the most logical 02 sensors first, I'll report back once I get them changed.

I'm not sure how true this is, but part of the problem could be "winter blend" fuel. I usually see a decrease in fuel economy of around 1-2 mpg with winter blend fuels. Keep us posted on what you find out.

I've never experienced this amount of economy loss before, and the problem started this summer. I can rule out winter blend fuel as the issue I am sure.

Yes, most definitely keep us posted if changing the o2 sensors helps. Since my re-build I've seen less than desirable fuel economy as well. Even when light footing it. We changed the driver's bank front o2 sensor but never got to the passenger bank.

I think I'm in the same boat as you Jon, but I haven't wanted to test the blocked cat idea, 'cause, well, that costs money. I occasionally get O2 or cat codes thrown. Before my old head gaskets blew, I was getting 16 mpg. That dropped and never came back even with the rebuild in there. I've got TMHs now, but haven't touched the exhaust yet. I think it's more than the 02 sensors because they fail intermittently. I was burning a LOT of oil before the rebuild went in, so the cat had to burn up a lot of oil.

Has anyone ever installed a new fuel charcoal canister? That wouldn't save that much gas, but I wonder if it helps in any noticeable way.

I've seen a big flat box up there, and never knew what it was. Is that it?

Last I checked, it was pricey too. All the times I spent under the Ex, I dont think I ever noticed it.

Hmm, that thingy probably shouldn't be talked about, because now mine will fail. :D

Ours "looked" ok --when I hung the different sized spare. I will be getting new tires soon, so I suppose It will deserve a look see.

Opinions on 31-10.50 15 at's?

i have 31's, they look good on mine, and will on yours too,

They sure do, :D
I meant, I am getting new ones, and want opinions on brand. I really like the General Grabber

And, the Falken Wild Peak

the generals with the red sidewalls would match if that means anything to you,,

also i like the more aggressive tread myself, but the road noise may be a bit much,,

although that doesn't matter to me,

Those Generals are pretty damn pricey. I guess I'm just getting old as I refuse to drop big bucks on tires anymore.

Until you look at goodyear wranglers--then the Generals seem like a bargain :D

Anything with the Goodyear name os WAY over priced and WAY overated. So I give you credit for not wanting Goodyear junk :D
