How many rockers are bad?

~Mark

I can't tell you for sure, or even if it IS a rocker, but usually somewhere within the first 10 minutes of startup I get a pretty decent knock on the driver's bank of the motor. I can't tell if it's a bad rocker or a sticking lifter. It hangs around for a couple minutes or so then goes away. The engine doesn't do anything funny, just makes a ticking sound. And it just started as it began to get cold outside this year. Is there a way I can differentiate from a rocker/lifter?

I had planned on getting all new rockers/lifters because the ones in there now have 160k+ miles on them, but the more and more I look at it, I might not even have to. Might just have to clean up the old ones, if I can..

EDIT -- the more I research this, especially on youtube, the more it sounds like a lifter..

I think that noise is almost always worn rockers/pushrod tips. I haven't heard of lifters going bad on the OHV...probably because they get more oil than the rocker arms.

You could always just get regular stock rockers and smith bros pushrods. Rockers aren't hard to switch out when they wear out and it would save you some money.

Okay, I gave up on rockers. I'm going to reuse my old ones.. we'll see how they do.

NIGHT 1 - 12/2/10
It officially begins!

I made an agreement with my brother, as long as I help him install some shelving and cabinetry in his garage, he'll allow me to use it to do the build, Queue Borat, "It's Niiiice."

Tonight I'll be moving all of my stuff over to his place and probably putting the engine up on the stand and maybe some prep work; cleaning/organizing. Nothin too much as I have to go to work in the morning anyways. If it deems itself necessary I'll post up some pictures, if not, tomorrow when I strip the paint.

I need some paint ideas! I was thinkin of doing a tribute to Ken Block's new Fiesta Rally Car.

haha, basically I was thinkin of a Black and High Visibility Green two tone under the hood, but am open to more suggestions!

You know me.. I'm partial to lego motors.

If you find any of your old rockers are in really bad shape, let me know.. I have spares from that extra rocker assembly.

~Mark

:confused: Is that all powder coated? or rattled on?

And thanks, I will keep you updated. I don't know FOR SURE when I can get this other motor out of my truck, but hoping for mid next week.

All rattle can engine paint. So far, the paint is staying on there.. The motor in the X is now a few years old (3-4) and the one in the Van is a year old.

James,

For some reason I couldn't get the photos attached in a PM, so I'll post this here.. as it's still considered a progress post.

After being tossed around Maryland for just under a week, USPS finally got the gaskets delivered to me. I should have taken a picture of it as it was sitting on my porch, but this box looks like it's gone through hell and back. It appears the timing cover gasket was torn, I don't know if that was before or during shipment, but it's not going to bother me too much as the set I bought has another one, and if all else fails I could just use a little RTV there.

I thought it'd be best if I provide you with the info and these pics as it was your money that paid for the shipping and I think the package was a little mishandled. But anyways thanks again man!!

Wow...looks like the right address was on there too. The gasket was definitely intact when I shipped it, so I guess the disgruntled USPS employee who apparently used the box as a football must have caused it  I am glad you have a backup, otherwise I'd be more upset.

Anyway, glad the other stuff made it to you alright...looking forward to watching the build!

I have heard that black is supposedly better for heat dissapation, but lighter colors are good for detecting fluid leaks. You could do the block green, the heads black, and the valve covers green maybe?

NIGHT 2 - 12/07/10

Got pretty sick the past few days and it was below 20 both chances I had to work on it, so I skipped. But I got on it tonight and tore the new motor down!

When I took the OHV oil pan/girdle off I was shocked to see the amount of debris left in the motor, man was I furious  even found a top to what looked like a tube of something or another laying in there.

I mocked up retrofitting the SOHC bottom end on the block and it looks like it's all going to go together fine, just had a few questions though..

1. I'm swapping out the main studs over to a set of new SOHC ones, should I use the SOHC's torque specs or the OHV's? If it's different, what is the spec itself?

2. What are the torque specs on the SOHC's girdle bolts (the ones that bolt into the main bolts).

Sorry for the crappy pics as my camera died due to the cold, and my cellphone and ghetto internet connection was all I had tonight :p:

I may return to the garage for an hour or so to button up the bottom end.

If you're going to the trouble of building such a motor, you want new rockers.

The factory rockers in the OHVs are known to wear. When you tear the top end apart and get the rocker assembly off, you will see large circular indentations on each rocker arm. Usually the pushrods are worn on the tips as well. The lifters themselves don't usually go bad, though there have been cases, but my guess is they went bad from the worn rocker/pushrod combo which overextended a lifter in a situation where there was a lot of valvetrain flutter going on.

To fix this issue, the replacement rocker assemblies from Ford have new, harder rockers on there. You can get the ENTIRE rocker assembly (rockers, shaft, springs, bolts) from Tousley Ford (forum member FORDSVTPARTS) for cheap. Get two and don't look back. Smith Bros. pushrods with the hardened tips would also be good, if you're needing anything other than factory length pushrods, which you will with a 422 cam.

The lifters are the expensive part, a set of 12 new ones will cost you more than the motor. You can find cheap sets for $100, but they are not worth it. There's no reason not to clean up the factory set, but if you can score a deal on some new Clevite/Sealed Power lifters, go with those for an all-new setup.

If you're using SOHC studs then you use the SOHC stud torque specs, since torque specs are particular to fasteners, not usually what they're attached to.

wow that is retarded:mad: Though I expect the stuff got in there when he had the timing cover off before it got wrapped up and shipped to me. Good thing you decided to use the SOHC pan instead of the stock one...

Your tellin me... hahah

Everything else looks to be in amazing shape. I'd be shocked if the bottom end of this thing had over 500 miles on it.

Which reminds me James, I got a hold of Mr. Bosha, real nice guy! He told me all about how properly this motor was broken in and taken care of the short time it was in the ranger.

Tomorrow I plan to finish cleaning it up and probably will end up putting the bottom end together.

subscribing.. my 4.0 ohv is all stock and is pushing 197,000 so i've been looking to rebuild.. thanks for the guidance

911!!

I'm out workin on the motor right now, anyone know the torque spec on the main cap bolts on the SOHC motor? Also, the crankcase reinforcement bolts, as the Haynes manual refers to them.. I called them the girdle bolts for lack of better terms.

Both bolts are pictured in my last post.
