Just curious - I just changed the oil on my Explorer, and was BS'ing with my buddy while he was changing the oil on his '90 Bronco II, and was wondering if the front axle for the Bronco II was suitable for an Explorer SAS, or even desirable?

I've seen a half-dozen of these things around here, cheap as hell.

Yay, nay?

I tried to do a search, but the majority of the results are for early Bronco front ends, or something (it seems that the "ii" in the search gets stripped).

B2's never had solid axles. They were TTBs.

Yep, TTB- Twin Traction Beam, like the first gen explorers

Oh.

Hrmm.

Perhaps I need to look closer at things.

But, didn't the 1990's have a Dana 35 in them, not a Dana 28?

It could be done -- and would give a lot more suspension travel -- but for the cost and effort, I'd just slap a Dana 44 under there. It would end up being about the same amount of work.

Let me know if you need a Dana 44. I might have access to one or two. No guarantee about gear ratio, etc., just an axle worth building in the suspension style of your choice -- Ford radius arm, Jeep links, etc.

Early Broncos had solid axles not Bronco II's :)
