I just use the plasic ones.

Put the tool in, push the fuel filter and line togther as you push the tool in, then pull, and it should pop off.;)

If the 1st gen is anything like the 2nd gen, it's a total pain in the ass. The only way I have managed to get the bugger off is to take two of the little plastic removal tool things and sort of stack them together. Just one of them wasn't thick enough to push the clips all the way up. The metal scissor like tool is a waste of time.

tube of chapstick works perfect :) slit it down the side, put it over the line and push it in there..

the plastic fuel line tools always work for me, but I have seen the fuel filter done with chapstick tube

These fittings take some practice, they are like a chinese finger puzzle
You cannot pull on the fitting until the disco tool is inserted fully all the way around, then pull apart.

If you destroy the metal retainer inside the fitting, replacements are available at most good parts stores, so you dont have to replace the entire line

Personally I like the fuel lines on my 88 about 47 million times better... plastic clip pulls out with screwdriver.. 300K miles, no leaks no problems.....

I just did the two lines at the motor on my dad's ranger in like 2 seconds. Once you get it it's easy.;)

Ditto, I think that there were a few fuel leaks in bad wrecks that made them decide to make them more permanent. The plastic locks of old lines easily will break if enough force is applied(wreck).

The plastic tools almost all work better. I think it's because the plastic tools are thicker and/or deeper than metal tools. The high dollar pretty colored aluminum fuel tools aren't better than the cheap plastic tools. I've used about four different kinds, the cheap common plastic set is the best. Good luck,

I assume you already checked out the fuel filter replacement thread for info and pics..

I use a metal tool and it workd great; never had a problem with it.

Where did you get that Al???

For me the plastic tools works just takes some getting used to. Does anyone have any tips when laying under the ex and NOT get covered in gas??

Does anyone have any tips when laying under the ex and NOT get covered in gas??

Trigger the fuel shutoff under the foot panel, passenger side, then start the engine until all the gas is gone. Shouldn't be much gas left after that.

Thx for the help all

Will try the plastic tools, have the metal one shown above. Doesn't work at all. Seems like the leading edge may be too big or something. Fingers wont slip over it I guess.

I've had luck with both the plastic and metal ones but never both.. If I can't get it with the plastic ones I switch to the metal ones as I seem have have better luck with the plastic ones... but sometimes the metal one works better..

The problem I've run into with both plastic and metal tools is where the split is in the tool. for some reason I always manage to get one of the spring fingers stuck in that seam. My cure for this was to wrap a small strip of a soda can around the tool to cover the seam. If that don't work just muscle it apart and replace the spring.

I had a heck of a time with mine. I just keep trying and trying, then all the sudden, pop it came off I may take it in next time.
