Has anyone removed the resonator from the exhaust system...I would like to get a better sound (temporary) until I save up some extra money (wife, kids, house, etc.....you know the deal  ) for a full modified system. Maybe removing this item does nothing to the sound of the system. BTW, I have a 98 XLT 5.0. Any Help would be appreciated.

I removed the resonator when I put a Y pipe behind the muffler and ran 2" duals. For an old guy I think it has the perfect V8 sound. Try it. You'll like it.....

Welcome to the site.

Removing the resonator will not affect performance but will affect the sound as you desire.

I'll have to do a before and after on this tomorrow. Mine needs to be cut off anyways.

sounds WORLDS better !!!!!!!!!!
Just make sure you put some pipe on and get it the rest of the way out the back

Thanks for your replies....one more question I forgot to ask. I saw a flexable repair pipe at the parts store...Is this OK to use? I just want to remove the resonator and keep the rest of the stock system. I figured I could use the repair kit and throw on some exhaust tape at the connections to seal it. Any thoughts or better methods? Thanks

just hack it off behind the muffler and leave it at that.

what about hacking off the original muffler and placing a y in there and leaving the resonator ans the only "muffler" thats my plan for my tempporary fix (depending on tax returns :P )

Resonator removal is a good thing. Muffler removal is bad. You'll lose performance and it's annoying.

Expobronc, ^What he said^.

Magna, You may need clamps in addition to the tape. I havent used the tape so I'm not sure.

Okay.. well the before and after sucks. You can hardly notice a thing on the video. I had to switch angles because it rained after filming the before. But in the after you can really hear my supercharger whine.

I know the video doesn't show it, but is there a difference in person? I have a 5.0 as well and am thinking of doing this too.

I had the sunroof open and the back windows cracked while on the highway, I got off on an off-ramp... came to a stop... and thought, "who's truck do I hear with exhaust?" Looked around and no one else was there. It was me. :D But yeah.. it does sound slightly more like an aftermarket muffler. Not a whole lot.

Thanks. It's a Lakai.. size 11.5 :p

Just had mine done yesterday. Sounds nice outside and as a decent rumble inside even w/ the windows up.

How about a V6?

Has anyone done this to a V6? I am wondering what the sound might be like? I have been considering it.

I did it to all my V6's. Just run a single cat, no resonator, single 2.25" pipe, cat and muffler. You can do 2.5" from the muffler back if you want.

I am looking into my options for my Bronco II Exhaust with the new 5.0l.
I do not like the way the stock 5.0L exhaust drops down so low around the transmission (bad for 4x4ing). I need to retain all 4 02 sensors and dual cats.
I understand the o2 sensors must remain in their relative positions to the catalytic convertors (same distance from inlet and outlet)
I am running Torque monster headers. I plan to run a single 3" exhaust, so basically it will go headers, dual cats, into single 3" muffler and out the back.

What do you guys think of this setup? Is there a better way with the 4 o2 sensors?

On my 92 4.0 V-6, I'm running a small Cherry Bomb Turbo II muffler, with factory cat and a custom bent pipe out the rear. It sounds great, tucks up very high on the frame, and weighs something like 50 pounds less than the stock muggler/resonator/pipe combination.

My V-6 sounds old school tough - and IMO better than the Flowmaster sound. Best part is that the Turbo II's sell for just $15 locally. At that rate, I can just change it out if it rusts or gets bent.
