It might have a little bit to do with the fact that I cut a good 4-5 inches of the fenders in that photochop.
Yeah, whenever my truck just sits in the driveway getting worked on, it looks too tall for the tires...but it must just be because I see it parked the same way for so long (like how I'm putting in a new clutch, etc right now). When I'm out on the street/offroad/parking lots/etc it looks perfect.
I think I remember you saying this was going to be just a small exo-project but it looks as if its starting to approach a full-blown cage project Especially now that you're talking about running tubes inside.
I always knew I had to run tubes inside because I cant run them between the doors on the outside, and if I were to flop the cage will defaintly cave. I guess it will be a full blown exo cage, with some braces inside. Who knows, its got a long time to go before I madke any decisions. Kert, I like the design, the bar between the doors wont work but other than that I liek it.
Bill's exo cage on his Ranger is attached to the firewall up front but to the frame behind the cab. It is nicely built and will protect he and the cab in a mild rollover without adding a bunch of weight to the truck or tubes everywhere.
Exo cage = HEAVY and LARGE.
If a rock doese hit the body panel through your cage then it is also harder to repair.
The cage must go around sheet metal instead of under/through it so that adds extra length to each run you make with the tube.
I stopped caring about body damage a long time ago. And my cage wil be similar to that, it will go through the body/cab at some points, for strength. I may not run one all the way out to the front and tie it to the firewall for weight and cost reasons.
Anyone have a good site for cage building. I dont know what works when it comes to cages, and photoshoped designs may look good but I want to know if they will support it in a rollover. Also, what is everyone using as far as tubing size goes.
Im also going to try and save when it comes to weight and cost, so I plan on running the front into the firewall or along side the drivers door instead of going full front. Also I realized that the top I had in mind was just obsurd and I can do with just a simple X brace.
And finally, im trying to learn how to use some 3d modeling software, ive been using Alibre Design, but is a bit over my head. Does any one else havea reccommendation?
Got reinspired to try and think of an exo cage for my explorer, and I also figured I'd see what it would look like chopped.. Here it is so far, going to show it to one of my buddies who makes cages for his race cars to see if he can help me out any with some better ideas, as this is probably my second attempt..
im gonna trya nd keep it as simple as possible I think, like rockrangers where it ties to the firewall but comes all the way back. It prolly wont be street legal when its all said and done so im going to just keep the doors off and maybe put a bar across them.
