What area of engineering are you majoring in?
Mech! My hope is to do more field engineering kind of stuff in the utility sende whether its gas or water, or hydro generation. But that could change hence why I went with mech instead of civil or electrical etc.

I cashed in my 401k early and used it as
Down payment for first house

It is great that you are even thinking of this at your age. You may actually be able to retire by 50 which is huge… most people carry debt and keep working until they are 70 and then it’s hard to enjoy all your toys
Retiring at 50 sounds nice! 😆😆😆

When I was 18, I got an annuity, fixed rate and pays me $50k a year over 20 years startingwhen I'm 65. The single premium payment was $10k. I watched my dad work 80+ hours a week for as long as I can remember, he retired this year. Bad back, bad neck, both hips replaced, both knees have fake parts. He can barely move. I don't want to be like that when I'm ready prop my feet up. I want a few good years to travel the world.

Mechanical is a great general purpose engineering degree. Very versatile with a lot of demand. One thing about engineering is that you don't have to get out of it completely at retirement and can do work remotely. I will retire this year and still plan to do one or two projects a year for a client who has become a good friend over the years.

Cough cough elevators cough cough

all things vertical transportation
Talk about a fun industry!
People don’t think about elevator's escalators and how many of them there are
Technology driven industry

Although with that said …. I really want a teslabot or two
Can be picking berries and doing lawn care while we go fishing camping wheeling

I am currently looking for an 8-12 acre piece of land that is around half woods and half cleared. The half of the cleared area will be lawn. Then, as soon as they make a good gas powered "Roomba" lawn mower I will buy it. I am not a big fan of cutting grass.

IMO, it is going to take a very long time for robots to replace people in trade jobs. If I was in my late teens right now, knowing what I know now, I would go into a trades job that pays well and doesn't destroy your body over time.

Eh you could always ohv swap it lol 😆 I was kinda wanting to that with my sohc. Cause man 5.0 even for parts cost an arm an leg overhere.( plus stupid high mileage). We've looked for one for our 94. Hope things work out for you man.

Yes! Can always consult haha. I want to go into utilities probably if I dont go back to UC because of security & generally more openings out of the city.

I have the option to get my UC acct to be an annutiy but theres not enough in it to be worth it. If I go back to UC after college for work Ill go with the pension option for that reason.

Definitely. The trades will be the last to go. Thats part of the reason I want to go into utilities & be a field engr because I can work hands on & build/fix things, and itll be hard for bots to do hands on things or in generation I can work a plant if its hydro thatll be harder for a bot to access because of location. Not only because I can get out of the city, but job security 😆 No one is using less water or power!

Eh at that point I think Ill drop another SOHC in 😆 I figure 5.0 or SOHC but I dont think OHV really for me. Itll work out! I got time to build it the way I want. Money no object Id find a way to shove a 7.3 godzilla or coyote into it haha

I think AI is going to hammer electrical, computer science and chemical engineering fields more than the others. For the others, I think AI will be a CAD type of tool on steroids. Civil engineering deals with unique circumstances for nearly every project with unique regulations and standards depending on jurisdictions the projects are located in.

Also, since I might not have mentioned this before, take the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) exam during your senior year of college. I screwed up and took it two years after I graduated. The EIT covers about everything you learn during your freshman and sophomore years. I had to study my ass off to get refreshed on all the stuff I had forgotten! Nearly everyone that takes it their senior year passes it without even studying because it is so fresh in your mind.

Definitely. AI can already write decent code I just have to check it over before I run it. Its made some basic number computing or trend analyzing stuff for me thats been actually pretty decent. I also think field work is a big part since theres human judgement when youre dealing with equipment that has to be up & running.

Ooh thats a good tip! I will definitely make note of that. Well see if I survive engineering school hahaha

Once you get past the first two years, the next two are fun because you are taking courses that are specific to your major. The first two years are brutal and boring.

What Tstat housing did you put in? Did you do the metal one?

Plastic, from Motorad no defects as far as I can tell everything opens as it sbould

Highly recommend this one. I put this on the Sport.

10-4! Im 90% sure its a bad head gasket, so for now the Explorer is grounded to local trips to Walmart or else it gets toasty really fast. On the flip side that means Ive been driving the Ranger when dad has the company truck and its been a great DD!
