Can anyone recommend a good remote starter system. Two way would be nice but isn't necessary. I've installed three different ones in vehicles over the years and they never seem to hold up. I don't need any gimmicks, but I would like the fob to replace the stock fob so I don't need to carry two fobs around. It also needs to bypass the vats system. :D

I installed new 2 way CodeAlarm on my 97 and used Viper 1 way on my 95 with window module installed 3 years ago. They both hold up well with no issues yet. The Viper was brought used and brought for 30.00 and remotes been tossed and stepped on with no problem. very easy to install on both of them.

I'd have to say Viper, or anything made by directed.
Avoid Crimestopper.

You get what you pay for here. It's worth spending the extra cash for something like this. I had 2 crimestopper systems that had major issues.
Running a Viper now and have yet to have a problem. :)

+1 Viper, but a little tip you might not have known about...the parent company of Viper, DEI Holdings, has for the last few years been buying up tons of smaller autostart companies. So now, if you buy a Viper, Python, Clifford, Astrostart, or Autostart (brand name), you're going to be buying the same brain with different remotes. I've had an Astro Start and a Viper and I found them to work almost exactly the same. (both very well)

Stay the hell away from Zensis though, I had one and it was buggy as hell, the alarm portion of the system would go off in the middle of the night from a gust of wind, and the range was never very good. I think it was very susceptible to interference. All in all, I hated it.

Compustar makes nice stuff. My friend just got a slice jr 2 way installed. The remote is super tiny. I think you have to go through a dealer though and they will want to install it. You could ask if they would sell you the parts to install yourself.

I have an older 2 way with a larger lcd remote. Still works fine.

Compustar CRAP!!!

Compustar makes nice stuff.

Not based on my experience. Bought a used car yr ago w/ CM6200 already in. Worked good until went to use it recently (winter has arrived). Does everything BUT START THE CAR. Nor does it flash any error codes. But my biggest issue is Compustars lack of customer support; as in NONE! What good is any product w/o a minimum of customer support nowadays? It's CRAP!!!

And stay farrrrr away from CrimeStopper.

I had a Viper (Directed Electronics) on my previous Gen I Explorer. I loved it. Remote start, window mod, and some other goodies. I really liked being able to leave my HVAC set on so that in the morning my car would be nice and cool or toasty, whichever I preferred.
