If you mean the steel inner fenders where tons of stuff is mounted that was never changed. Just the plastic inner wheel wells.

Here are my new fenders, if I have to trim more I'll trim along the next higher body line. To mark the line for this cut a built a little jig out of cardboard that had a felt tip pen in one end and a long sheet metal screw in the other. I held the sheet metal screw up to the fender edge and the felt tip was place in the cardboard at the proper distance from the edge. Then I just scribed the line. I used a 3" air cutoff wheel to do the surgery.

Yeah.. the fenders are just sort of "skins" that bolt on. All your under hood components are bolted onto this inner frame dealio:

Rick,

Why did you go with the steel fenders? Is it because the other ones took too much damage because they stuck out too much? Just interested to know before I spend $$$ for something I may not want in a year or two.

Sincerely

This is preventive body work... I just couldn't bear to smash the fiberglass fenders! I knew it was just a matter of time and I was "babying" the truck trying to avoid brushing them against stuff. I am going to keep them for those areas where the local cops don't take kindly to tires sticking out a mile. Here in AZ it's not a problem.

My inner fender liner has already been deleted some. I'm prepared to do more, that takes no time at all with my snips. About the only thing they protect is are the fuel lines on the driver side, so I might just leave that bit. They don't protect much of anything else.

As for the paint, a friend of mine in Austin has a paint gun. Hmmm, maybe I'll go up there another weekend? But as I think about it more, my time and gas are worth something, so I might just have Maaco do it. I'll probably install them, take them off, paint the inside with a rattlecan, and just have them do the outside. Maybe it will even be cheaper that way, only one side (unless thats what they quoted me for).

There goes my bday money!

Well on the BII I have a bunch of crap mounted to the plastic liners, or skirts. I like them there so I am gonna cut and make them fit as necessary. This will be my third set of fenders on my truck so I am familiar with their fit.

Maaco will do a fine job of just psraying some fenders, their paint and coverage are not what I have an issue with, it;s their prep and body work thats sucks....

I too chose the 3" fenders Alec, however I went Autofab as you know because I dont like the normal BII one's.....Perry's fit Explorer's decent so thats the way I would go (plus it's 1/2 the $$$$)

I should have the fenders by Thursday or Friday! Clarification: they'll be at my parent's house by then, I'll have to go pick them up ;)

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Cool I can't wait to see it

I want to see, too. That is my long term project.

Perry Jr. had some problems shipping them, so I have to give him a call to see what's up.

Well, they arrived in Houston today; I'll get them on Saturday when my parents drive down for lunch :D My mom is usually good at finding deals, so I told her if she can get them painted for around $100, to go ahead! If not, I'm gonna try my best at it.

paint them after you fit them, you wont be sorry. I have been told this a hundered times by everybody, including the guy from Autofab who built mine. I am taking their word for it.....

Fit them, drill them, remove them, paint them,, re-install them....alot of work! I know! I still havent done mine, they have been sitting there for a month now just looking at me.....

I was planning on painting them after if I do it myself. But since my mom's gonna have them all week, if she can find a deal, I'm gonna go ahead and have them done. I'll touch them up a bit if I scratch them when installing (besides the fact that they'll be the only body panels without scratches).

They're on!

And no, I don't have pictures and probably wont for a while. So unless you want to come down and take them, please don't ask.

Anyway, spent about 5.5 hours today putting them on. Not many problems, just a little tweaking. I still have to trim the front bumper and some stuff in the back to match the new fender contour, but that shouldn't take more than an hour or 2 next weekend. Overall, they look good and are on really well. They're a fairly high quality product, but not perfect. I'm going to get a few estimates on getting them painted, and will probably have that done in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Some people suggested I leave them white, paint my back panels white and put a star on the door ;) But I think not....

Once I trim the front bumper there should be absolutely no rubbing in the front. Hmmm, a little more TT and I could fit 35s? LOL!!! I might actually lower the front a bit since I have so much room now.

35s without major suspension or body lift work... that i would like to see!

When I get another DD in a few years....maybe.

Alec what does DD mean?
