1996 Ford Ranger
My fiance just replaced the clutch, flywheel, and slave cylinder on his 1996 ford ranger. Truck will now not go into gear AT ALL, whether truck is on or off, it doesn't shift at all. Clutch pedal feels normal, however when the pedal is let out it makes a hissing noise and there is a ticking noise as well. When trying to rock the truck into a gear, the truck tries to jerk forward when the clutch is let out and resists any shifting at all. Anyone have any ideas what is wrong? Truck also started smoking, however my fiance thinks it is some of the "knock 'er loose" burning off that he used to remove rusty bolts. HELP PLEASE :)

He may have put the clutch disk in backwards, if not the system may not have been bled properly, also I think there is a lock on the trans that if the clutch is not depressed you can't shift. This may be out of adjustment also.

Possibility that the shifter was not installed in the correct spot. For example, if the trans was is in lets say 1st gear when the shifter was removed, the trans stayed in 1st but the shifter may have been installed into another shift rail like 3rd/4th. the trans wont let you shift into two gears at once, so the shifter will not move.

Remove the shifter, make sure the shift rails are in neutral and re install shifter.

There is no such lock on this transmission. The only lock is to stop you from going to fifth gear to reverse.

I'm going to bet this is the issue. It's easy to do and also easy to correct if you pull the shifter out and take a peep down the hole to see where the shaft should lock into.

Does the truck try to move when started?

Yes, this is more likely the problem.

YES! It tried to jerk forward when he turned it on and was letting the clutch out trying to get the shifter to move.

Thank you for your help guys, I will pass this on to my fiance!
