High milage explorers?

Not Much...

Mine's a 95 w/ 82,000. I bought in last August w/ 69,000. When I bought it it had the ORIGINAL plugs & wires...so I promptly replaced those and a thermostat and cleaned the throttle body...runs almost like a dream. As far as I can tell it has "newer tires, but other than that...its bone stock & original equip.!

Oh, I added a JVC CD Player! :)

replaced without being broken:
-entire stereo
-wheels
-tires
-shackles
-air box
-more to come

Michelle,
WHat product did you use to clean the throttle body on your truck? I think mine needs to be cleaned, but I wasn;t sure what product to use or where to get it. Thanks!

95xlt....There are several companies that make a throttel body cleaner. Any one of them will work just fine. They're like carb cleaner just alittle bit less harsh for the body's. Just pull off the air tube and spray the body and the linkage. Be careful not to spray inside the body though...it could do harm(I doubt it will though, but just in case)

We used gum out

You know...that stuff Trak Auto carries. Did a pretty good job...I think they are pretty much all the same. Used a q-tip for those "just out of reach areas". Shines like new!

91 XLT with 98,x.. miles.

Replaced Parts:

Starter
Tranfer case
4x4 computer
Tranny
Front Sway Bar (don't know how that got bent)
and alot of little stuff

Just for the part or for the dealer to install it too?

i paid 25 bucks for the poly bushings, didnt have to pay for the install since they were already putting a 4" lift on for me. sorry i can't help with that aspect.

Did you have to pull the coil and the whole arm to replace the bushings? I am going to replace mine this weekend, and I was wondering how dificult is really was to do it.

Well I got somewhere around 77k on mine. Yep thats right just 77k. :)

The problems I have are:

Alignment: It will NEVER EVER Align so I don't even bother anymore

Front wheel bearings: Have to check constantly.

Big ass bolt not tightened down on the radius arm to TTB member. Someday I will get this fixed.

It leaks more oil then I put in it. :) Need new valve covers, re-do the rear axle cover seal, and need a new tranny and transfercase.

Tires: They are big and heavy so its hard to rotate them. (Okay this really isn't a problem of the trucks I am just weak! LOL)

Tire carrier: Poor hinge design from the begging will re-work it someday with a whole new bumper and design.

Dents: Okay these really are not your average high millage problem but they are there and somewhat big.

Rear Leaf Springs: They are totaly sagged. I am replacing with 4-door springs with an Add-a-leaf.

Front Coil Springs: They are saggy too.

My Keyless entry is sitting in the box still. Same box I put it in after I bought it from Matt. LOL

Vibrations: Anytime I go over 65mph I get shakey. :)

Anti-Sway Bars: The darned quick disconects that I use in the back are to long and so the bushing come out. Course I could fix this if I cut the darned things down but I am lazy. I lost one of my front quick disconects so now I have a bolt in there.

Seats: The front seats just plain ole suck!

Carpet: It needs to be vacumed. :)

I think thats about all I got right now.

Oh yeah, the stereo is good but the volume control sucks!

New to the board and new to the Explorer. Bought mine two months ago, 95 Sport 4x4, with 78K on it. It was bone stock and I don't think much was ever replaced on it. As for repairs I've done:

Front brakes & rotors and what a difference that made when braking.

It didn't come with a roof rack so I put a Yakima rack on.

Shocks are trashed on it so I've order some Edlebrook IAS to go on in a couple of weeks.

Tires will be next. They are goodyear now but have been on the truck since the factory so it is time.

The front Fog light driver side is out.

That is about they only problems.

My 95 has been nickle and diming me for last year.

65,000 - water pump
95,000 - Air ride shocks, rotors
95,000 - trans filter and fluid, tires
100,000 - Re-posses from ex
110,000 - rotors turned, brakes, plugs, wires, foglight, int. light
115,000 - front wheel bearing (other expensive stuff, you all seen my adds)
115,000 - also needs front axel seal on passenger side.

I also need to fix my lumbar seat, the switch leaks out the air, message center flashes air-ride problems, My check engine light comes on after an hour of driving, I have little heat in the winter, rear right door handle is broken, front right power window surges up and down, auto-locks work sometimes. Rotors always need to be turned.

I am a sucker and will probly buy another money pit, oh wait, I did, this 99 for parts.

[/B][/QUOTE]

Yup, the coils had to come out and the arm had to be pulled forward. This means after you are done, its going to need an alignment (if your picky about those things).
When I worked in a auto shop, I replaced a few of them on other explorers, at first it took me about an hour and a half to do (i had a rack). The fastest I could do it was an hour (thats per coil). It aint easy, lots of tugging and swearing!
Good luck!

Do I need a coil compresser to deal with the coils?? cuz I don't have one...

You know, I noticed this thread for many months now, and I have not posted 1 message in it in that time. So I guess I will post...

My Explorer only has 77000 miles on it, and I don't really consider that high mileage, ehehe.

All I've done is replace the shocks at 75000. New poly RA bushings are about to go in and so are plugs and wires.

No rust at all. There were a few chips that I touched up, and along the top edge of the rear liftgate there was paint chipped off all along the edge. So I touched that up as well. Some of the black areas were a little faded so I shot them with flat black and it looks OEM. The metal parts on the front bumper had rock chips in it and I sanded that down and repainted. The frame has a little bit of surface rust starting to form so I might hit it with some undercoating for good measure.
