I decided to replace my HU ground wire. I cut the black wire a few inches from the HU harness and then started up my X. The HU still came on. I thought it needed a ground to turn on? Anybody have any ideas why it did this? Alpine CDA-9835. Thanks.

Something has to be grounding it. I have the same HU.

Ha, yeah. Well I've got RCA's plugged in. Could those be grounding it?

the deck can get its ground from RCA's yes. Also from the can, mounts, anything metal on the chasis that touches the case.

Also some speaker wire systems (common ground systems) can supply a ground.
nothing to worry about

the ground wire is the important one for avoid a ground loop and should be connected to a good ground source as shart a distance as possible from the deck.

Ah yeah I left in the antenna. I guess that's what did it. I regrounded in a great location and scraped away all the paint. Thanks for the help!
