I want to make my '99 5.0 Explorer sound like a 5.0 Mustang.

I want my 5.0 Explorer to have that 5.0 Mustang growl. Basically I want it to sound just like a 5.0 Mustang. What all do I need to do to my engine and exhaust to accomplish this? This is a clip of what i want it to sound like Click here to see Video

To sound like that you'll need a MAC or Flowmaster muffler, Torque-Monster headers and no cats. That will get you close, but you'll probably need a cam to get it perfect.

you wont be able to make it sound like the 5.0L mustang, unless you add the GT-40 5.0L heads and upper intake...i have a true dual exhaust with 2.5 in. piping with 2 original flow 40 series flowmasters and no cats and it sounds close to the mustang but it does not produce the hollowed out sound the mustang produces...good luck

Explorers come with the GT40 heads and lower with the Cobra upper.

Like others have said, it probably will not sound exactly like a mustang but you can get close. But these are absolutly a must if you want it to come close. Headers, high flow cats (if you want them), and good exhaust system. Probably 3" with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Then if you really want it loud get an intake too.

I think if you took off the rear two cats and put in two hi-flows in the front.. it would sound a lot better.

Right now I have an intake, cam, headers, and magnaflow.. and it's pretty quiet. On the dyno I completely removed the muffler and ran it with just the four cats and it still was not that loud. Mine is much quieter than a Mustang with the same mods.

yup upsstream of the muffler. Flowmaster x chamber will almost get it

This is me pulling onto the highway at about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle. If you look at the speedo, it sounds like I am going alot faster than I actually am

the other question i have is why?

other than being extraordinarily loud for a car, 5.0 mustangs don't really sound all that great to me.

I greatly prefer the slightly more subdued sound of my truck with air flow stuff, e cam, headers, and magnaflow exhaust to the more ragged sound of most mustangs

I agree with expo5.0, the video clip sounded kinda raspy and not deep enough. My headers make mine have a deep rumble that isnt too loud. I may try to post some sound clips soon so you can hear what the headers sound like.

i should post one too- i really LOVE my magnaflow dual 2.5 in/dual 2.5 out with internal H pipe muffler sound wise.

i've had about 7 exhaust set-ups now so i think of myself as an expert.

Thanks for all the replys...I don't know what it is i love about the sound of them 5.0 Mustangs but I really do like the sound they make when you lift off the throttle, i haven't heard that in an explorer yet. Justin146 - your explorer sounds good but its not the sound im looking for (btw your door was ajar). It would be awesome if some of you guys with different exhaust set-ups could post some sound clips to help me out and to share with the site, im sure lots of people could benefit from them. I know it is possible for me to get that sound out of my 5.0 Explorer, im just looking for the things I need to accomplish it.

Oh yea....yours sounds great...actually i found your clip earlier today in another thread and i liked it so much that i put the site in my favorites. I mostly liked just how fast it was...wow it was quick off the line, but the sound is still less of what im looking for. Nice mounty tho.

It will sound better when I get my Torquemonster headers installed. Thae sound is with stock exaust manifolds. Talk about some port protrusion ha ha

OK, i just watched the clip again and listening to it, i love that sound, not just like the mustang but somewhat close...but i also see that you're bore'd over to 347ci. Does that have anything to do with the way yours sounds?
