I was just curious to see if there was a better tire size than 31x10.5 for a 5.0 X that wasn't going to be lifted? Off road use? Of course but I don't want to lift it and figured 31x10.5 might be too cramped for a liftless Explorer? I could be wrong. Can someone clear this up?

I run 265/50R20's, which roughly equates to 30.5 x 10.75, but my wheels also have a half inch of offset. Without offset wheels or wheel spacers, you may run into rubbing issues against the inner fender wall with tires of that width.

Crank the bars and shackle the rear or use monroe coil overs like I did.
You really don't want bigger if you have 3:73's..maybe32's.

i have a 99 XLS and i put 31x10.5's on it with very little extra work, i used stock deerhoof rims,
the very little work was to put on the Monroe shocks with the springs on them, and a hair of trimming on the front plastic fascia under the bumper,,

I'm skeptical about twisting the torsion bars and doing shackles because I'm OCD and doubt I can get the height and everything level, I also am afraid of ruining good parts on the truck.

I'm not sure what rear end/gears I have also.

Then I would not use 31's even.

go to walmart get the wrangler radials. they are $80-90 a peice. awesome thread. i had them for near 60k miles and they looked new. do awesome in the snow. they are 235/75/15 which are stock. i did a good amount of wheeling with them

Most 31" tires will be designed for heavy duty -semi off road use.

They are heavier, harder and wider. You will sacrifice ride quality and fuel economy by fitting the 31's/

Measure the center of the lower control arm bolt in the front cross member. If they are even side to side, you are level.

However, you will need to "settle" the torsion bars by letting the front end roll off a curb after each adjustment. Then pull to a level surface to measure.

Lifting the front will change the camber angle, an alignment will be needed, along with some camber adjusters.

Honestly I was just thinking of keeping it simple and going with a set of Hankook Dynapro ATM, Grabbers or Toyo Open Country AT2s. It will see off road but nothing wild. I don't want this thing to suck off road either though.

here is a pic of my x with no lift on it with 31x10.5 bfg. I have cragars so i rub a little bit cause the backspacing pushed the wheels out a tad.

My v8 sport and my brothers v8 xlt both with 31x10.5 x 15 BF Goodrich all terrains on stock wheels no lift , both have the Monroe coil overs but they fit without them

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere, but my experience is that the taller tires rub on the sway bar, so your turning radius decreases. No biggie, just something to know going in to a taller tire.
