Jon And Sheri's Vitamin D Wagon

Very Nice Jon!! Happy Fourth (to all by the way), wonder if you will "relax" today?? I cannot fathom how much time you have spent to get so far in so little time!!!

(in comparison) I bought Chevy tow hooks about 12+ years ago to put on the front of the Ex. I just found them in a box in the basement...

Son-in -law and I had a roman candle fight, that was kinda cool

The Top. The top.
No progress at all --well, I did get the roll bars painted and padded.

So, Sheri started messing with the sewing machine and could not get the needle to pick up, or "hook" into the bobbin thread. I looked it over, as she was "100% certain" she had it set up correctly.
After joining a sewing pattern and machine forum, and getting about 6 "sounds like a timing problem" answers, I tore into the machine to make what should have been a simple adjustment. One member posted a link to this gif image of "how a stitch is formed". This now had me convinced I understood the mechanics of what is going on.

The procedure is all over the internet. Right?
I went about adjusting the timing, but it became apparent the needle was a tiny bit to the right of the hook. That made perfect sense as why they were missing the connection. So, me being the idiot I am, pushed the needle rod to the left. This is a big no no see as it slides through 2 precision guides, kind of like a valve push rod with a 2" sleeve at each end. Any bend at all locks it up.
Meanwhile, back on the machine forum someone posts up that on this machine the needle flat should face left."If the needle flat is not to the left the bobbin thread will not hook"

Sheri said un uh no machine is like that. She looked in the manual --sure enough the needle was incorrectly installed with the flat to the rear. Installing it correctly moved the point of the needle perfectly in line with the hook.:rolleyes:

So, yeah a tiny correction could have saved me a whole day of head scratching and chasing tiny screws.

Now for the good stuff. New parts are on the way.

I checked around town talking to some experienced seamstre---er persons, and found a nice lady who was willing to give it a whirl. She was rather confident she could handle the job, planning things out, showing me how she was going to miter the corners when her husband came in and insisted she could not take on the job. Her machine couldn't handle it according to him.

She went on to tell him she sews letters onto leather letter jackets for the high school kids. The was 2 times as thick as the straps and cloth doubled.

He got kind of angry and finally let it slip out he didn't like jeeps cause he drives a prius. He wasn't going to allow her to stress out over this one.

I just picked up all the stuff , apologized for runing his day, and came back home. I am going to take her some ice cream for her time because she was actually being very cool til he came along.

Anyway. yeah. the top.

Ahh.. Piutude.. I bet his excrement don't stink either.... Business must be so good for them that they can afford to turn business away to the point that they may even be badmouthed...

Sarcasm; I love people(Americans) who are so proud of their Jap cars and put down my American stuff.

Keep at it, you'll get it done. About 24 years ago I got help from my mother to sew a J.C. Whitney rug that didn't fit right in my Ranchero. We cut it to lay properly, and then used our hands(fingernails) to force a big needle through the rug to sew it up. Been there,

Isn't that just something else.

I hope you corrected the asshat and told him it was for an Explorer not a JEEP. I would have :D

The top saga continues-
About 4 months ago I took the Explorer to an upholstery shop to see about making a top
He measured and said he'd get back to me. I waited about 3 weeks and he said he was ordering some fabric. I waited 3 more weeks and he said he was waiting for another catalogue. I waited another 2 weeks and told him I would just order the stuff on line if he would call back with the needed quantity.

He never called back. Being the only upholstery shop around, I just decided to take this into my own hands.

Well, now that I am in a hurry to get this done, I decided to give him one more chance , and ask WTF dude?
He said he got busy and entirely forgot. However Thursday he will get it done for me and give me a good deal. He seemed truly apologetic, so, I guess we'll see.
I have seen several examples of his work and it is excellent, so I am hoping for results.

crossing our fingers for you Jon,,
hope it is a good one,,

Any update on the top?

I hope to see your rig soon Jon Hint Hint... Looking great it has made so much progess since it obtained your love.

Did he get it done?

Nope not yet. Going to pick it up today and back on it Monday I guess.
Yesterday was a bad communication day. I was in the shop blasting and coating stuff, he needed my help to stretch and install snaps. I tried calling him back last evening and he had taken off to go to a BBQ at some friends.

Today and tomorrow he is doing work on some church pews which need to be finished before 9:00 AM for tomorrows service. He tried to squeeze me in ahead of them but just couldn't quite get it done.
What is finished is very impressive. I really appreciate his attention to detail.

However, now I am in a pickle. I was counting on having this weekend and the remainder of the week to work on my front suspension. I am afraid to start it now, for fear of it being in pieces Monday when I need to drive it to the upholsterers.

The front will need to be reworked before this truck gets wheeled. It has way to short of shocks on front. Oh, and the steering angles are just plain unsafe to be driving 4 hours from home on winding Missouri roads.
