yup...you are right.

People here....if you are in the group buy, please email me your screen name, and most frequent visited email address.

Thanks

I've browsed through this thread, and this sounds like a very interesting chip. If I had the money, I would get one. I don't really know why some people are so concerned about MPG though. I wouldn't buy the chip for gas mileage concerns. Even if it would get about 1-2 MPG better, remember that you are now recommended to buy Premium gas -- which is 20 cents higher/gal where I live. It would also be very difficult to get an accurate "before vs. after" MPG. Wind plays a large factor on SUV MPGs. You'd probably have to average 10+ tanks "before" and "after", drive the same speed, drive the same route, and have the same weather conditions, in order to realize any MPG gains or losses with the chip.

Ok, got more gas this morning...

269.4 miles / 15 gallons of gas = 17.3 mpg

Once again this is normal daily driving. I drive City/rush hour traffic, everyday.

How the hell do you get such good mileage? I get about 195mi for 15 gal. of gas thats 13 mi./gal. What up wit dat. I do have a heavy foot, but still!!!

You answered your own question..... heavy foot.

keep in mind that black magic was racing around when he first got the chip, and he got more than 16 mi/gal, thats not bad all things considered

You guys are missing the point. All three of us, phat, Black and myslef have 2001 Sports.

We all have 17.5 gallon tanks and 4.0 SOHC's.

Phat and I get 13-14 mpg daily driving. I don't get on it hard like Phat does, but we get the same mpg. Mine's a little more at 230 per tank.

Amazingly Black gets 17.5 mpg. something doesn't add up. He also said he got that before the chip.

They did redesign the SOHC for 2002. Black, do you have a pic of what your intake cover looks like?

2001ExpSport,

blackmagic has a 2001 sport like yours. Mine(2002 sport) does look a little bit different. I dont have any pics sorry.

And I dont have any MPG avg's.

Paul

Matt, keep in mind you have 33" tires and a lift.

The tires, even if you have re-geared to compensate, are still much heavier than stock sized ones. Big loss there.

The lift makes a big difference too. I guess from pushing a much larger hole in the air while going down the road than a 4" shorter stocker. I used to get 17mpg in my '95, then immediately dropped to 13 after the body lift.

My '97 4x4 SOHC Sport gets 16.5 MPG around town, 19.5 MPG on the highway. That's with a 3" body lift, 2" TT/shackle lift, 32" tires and the factory 4.10 axle. I also don't baby it around town either.

Today at lunch I needed a car wash so I filled up less than full tank.

186.8 miles / 10.8 gallons gas = 17.3 mpg

2001ExpSport, As far as my mileage. I drive 80-100 miles a day. Highway, but durring rush hour times. So there is a good about of stop and go. When I go to FL this week I will be able to burn about 4.5 tanks of gas so I will be able to get a good highway mileage average.

i didnt read all of this thread, or the other one about the group buy, but i dont understand all the "hub-bub" about this chip. ive had the superchip for about 1.5 years, and i love it. i just assumed that this apten chip was just another chip out there, like the hypertech, superchip, diablo, etc.

whats so great about this one?...what makes it so drastically different?

i saw that someone called it the "apten diablo chip." is it a diablo chip or not?...whats the deal?

oh, and i hear everyone keep calling it a "custom chip." well, you dont need a real custom chip unless youve got some serious mods going. for most of us with a kkm, exhaust, you dont need/want a custom chip - in fact, you probably cant get someone to burn you a custom chip for just a somewhat freer flowing exhaust and a conical air filter.

like robert said before, if someone can get some comparison numbers between the superchip and this apten chip, id be willing to try switching chips, perhaps.

im sorry if i come across a little skeptical & cynical, but basically, all these chips do the same thing. sure the shift points may be slightly different, and MPG gains may be slightly different, and crap like that, but they all pretty much do the same thing. like i said before, give me a convincing argument; what the hell, ill give it a try if you can convince me.

The chip is a diablo blank burned by Apten Performance. I don't know about which is better and all that.. And you're right about the free flowing exhaust and the open filters.. Apten even says you don't need to customize a chip for those particular mods... I'm not gonna try to convince you to switch or anything because I have no experience with other chips in my explorer...

I think the hype is because Black magic got dyno'd and the numbers are actually true. I have always seen the advertisements say what the gains could be, but never saw it proven with a dyno until now. I think that Dyno turned everyone on.
