With all the discussion of ruining an engine and it being more proned with an open air filter I was going to build some sort of a sheild, but is there a snorkel that works with a KKM? I dig the concept of a snorkel and even think it would be great that it is open to suck cold forced air at higher speeds. Any thoughts?

Danny, I know of no one running a snorkel. I know osopolar was looking at making some for the explorers, but must have had some logistics to work through. keep in mind if you were making a snorkel for an open air filter you would have to be able to encapsulate the air filter and make it basically waterproof, otherwise whats the point of hte snorkel anyways? Some people I've seen even have the air filter mounted on the roof and the tube going through to the engine from there. I don't recall ever seeing an Explorer with one though.

Well perhaps I could pick up one from like Safari snorkels and have to mold my own parts for the inside. I have heard of a few guys having trouble with a KKM and sucking water in their engine (Kampy even did that in Attica, luckily it killed before there was trouble) but I think he had a coffee can trying to protect the filter from splash. I would rather spend a hundred bucks extra now than have my engine get shot.

How does anyone else protect their KKM's?

Someone on here is running a ranger with a pretty nice snorkel. I believe it's custom. I can't remember who it is, but I'll try and find the thread that I saw it in (it's some sort of run pictures). I imagine it's not too tough to go to an X from a Ranger.

there is a guy in Pueblo (coloradoans) that has a snorkle on his X I have seen him many times but never can get a hold of him I will try and find him and see what I can find out!

snorkles

I want to know about the snorkles too. i was thinking one of a Land Cruiser and modify it.?

well Danny? did you get anywhere with this? I've heard that snorkle for a 4Runner works on an X with some mods.....

IMO almost anything will do as long as it works off the passenger side of your truck (that's where the "pipe" is located).

that one on a Ranger looks sort of..........well, like a chimney...... but I guess no complaints since it works, right?

Hi there.... well I`m running a Safari (fyber glass) snorkel, but i did some mod that you might consider interesting... i took out the original air filter box and put a K&N high flow air filter and did the conections with the snorkel with pvc pipes......
I realiced that installing the snorkel will reduce my air intake and the air will take longer to get to the engine...so when i put in the new filter it makes the air intake bigger,,,, i don`t know if i explain my self very good,,,,but i will post some pictures soon.....
may be tomorrow......i hope you mlike it
:bounce:

I am very interested in a snorkel. You think if I contact that dino guy he could make me one?

I posted those images too, he is from venezuela, his name on this forum is chola, and he have the same fiberglass snorkel that ricky-venezuela have on his X, but they mount them in diferent ways... I pretty sure it is a copy of a toyota land cruiser snorkel, but I don't know exactly...

danyboy i hope the pictures oso polar posted of my explorer could answer your question about the way you can use a conical filter and a snorkel..
hope you like it

Did those Pictures ever make it to being posted? THanks!

I'm gonna have to go through the list of available snorkles from Safari Snorkels and pick one that would best work for the Explorer. Got to find one that mounts on the passenger side and has mounting points that would fit X's fender. This could be done you know. I need time to digest it.......

Here is a home made Explorer snorkle:
