Isn't Hole in the Rock extremely technical and difficult?
The maze sounds fun, but I for one don't think that I would have enough time to do that.

Bump for a couple of new thoughts. It looks like the first weekend after Memorial Day is getting the most votes. I also visited with Rick and talked about the run - and both he and Char can make it if it is that weekend, plus he had an interesting idea. Some of you may remember reading about the run I made during my Herc Tour back in 2001 (do a search for "Herc Tour") when I joined Peter Weber and Leebo for their Moab Colors Run that November by spending two days on the remote White Rim trail. Rick mentioned the possibility of Exploring the remote Maze area of Canyonlands National Park, and then I thought of the Hole in the Rock trail that follows the old Mormon route. Either run would be two or three days and require primate camping in VERY remote areas. Would anyone be interested in participating in an adventure like that either before or after the regular event? At this time it is just in the brainstorming stage, but once Rick mentioned the Maze idea I like the idea  obviously most won't be able to do it because it will require too much time off of work, but for those who could, we would like to get some feedback on interest in the idea.

Sounds very interesting, if youall dont think my truck is too "small" i would be very interested to do either of these runs after the regular moab run. i would need to know pretty soon so i can request the whole week off of work.

I didnt know there was any runs in the maze? is there unofficial trails there, or would we just wander the maze looking for fun obstacles and awesome scenery among the most secluded and unexplorerd place in the lower 48?

rino, Hole in the Rock is rated a "4" trail which means that an Explorer with 33" tires and a locker should be able to take it on - your Explorer looks dang close to that already. Joshua, you've already got that equiment so you should have no problem. I don't have any firsthand knowledge of the Maze at all and suspect that it may indeed be an adventure of "wander[ing] the maze looking for fun obstacles and awesome scenery among the most secluded and unexplorerd place in the lower 48?" per your post... I have no idea what adventure would await; like I said, this is just an idea in the planning stages.

I'd defiantly be interested in joining on either run.

I am up for either of th extra runs.

This gives me a reason to buy that new "extreme" cooler I've been wanting! And a new gas can..... And a ??...............

I missed a couple of the runs when I was in Russia 2001-2003, and now I'm hoping to go back for three weeks to rebuild an orphanage. I will be gone basically all of May, and if I can extend it into a vacation afterward I might be out the first half of June too. Also I agree with those that worry about the heat, not only for my week radiator and wimpy tranny cooler, but just the fact of being in the middle of the desert in June is HOT :fire:
April is definately the nicest month to go to Moab as long as you can avoid the crowds, especially on and around Easter. Although that might be cool to show all of those J**pers at the Easter Safari what Explorers are made of.

There seems to be alot of issues with june in moab, and i am rethinking the heat issue? ideas?

The vote thread reveals that we will indeed schedule this for the first weekend in June, 4th-6th. Joshua, early June may be hot, then again it may not, it's a crapshoot. I think we need to schedule consistently and wonder about (starting next year) just automatically schedule for mid-May every year we continue to go from now on.

There are plenty of trails for a stock 91 to do. I guess it's time to start setting up a signup thread and I'll work on that this weekend sometime, that way we will start to see how many of each category of vehicle we have.

I've noticed that although we put a lot of work into preplanning runs, we oftentimes decide at the spur of the moment to change. Let's talk about what trails we want to do and sort of "pencil" them into the schedule for now. I'm good for anything but I always want to try something new, and for three years I've been wanting to try Flat Iron Mesa (rated 4). We didn't run Golden Spike last year and it's my favorite trail and I'd be in the mood to run it again. And I've calmed my terror down enough after three years to try Moab Rim again. Also, my vehicle isn't BigDawg enough for Pritchett Canyon but if the BigDawgs try that I'd like to ridealong with one of them on that one.

Who didnt run golden spike last year? hahahaha We did, then we got lost and rad some other trail none of us knew existed...man that was fun.

I usually just say I'm coming, show up, and then each morning decide which trail to ride along with right then and there, its worked great so far, but I supose if it wasnt for the effort of you guys guys like me would be screwed :)

Anyways I'll be there, hopefully, that will make 5 years in a row :)

I see the main weekend of riding will be Jun 4 - 6. That works for me.

Are we also going to do either the remote Maze area of Canyonlands National Park, or the Hole in the Roc trail that follows the old Mormon route? If we run this the week before (May 31 - Jun 2 or 3), this will allow those of us driving a long way to drive over M-Day weekend. (Which may or may not be a good idea)

Any thoughts?

I really enjoy these trips and will be very sad to miss it. I guess that it for the best though, my boss is already going to kill me for taking the time off to go to Russia and then later the Outer Banks. If I asked for another vacation right now he'd probably tell me I could just take a permanent vacation.

So Jun 4 - 6 it is. Stoked someone finally made a decision.

Gerald did you get a sign up thead going? Just curious.

:o Oops, not yet. :D I'll set something up this weekend. I plan on probably staying at Canyonlands Campground. Sorry to hear you'll miss it again Dignan.

Jamie, did you guys find Rusty Nail? That may be the trail off of Golden Spike that you are talking about. Scott, that was just a preliminary idea, but I'd like to try it if I can work it in, but there's no way I could be out there a week early on Memorial Day. I don't know how to get a trail map to Hole in the Rock but am very interested in running it.

Thanks Marty. After reading those links I really want to try it

I need to ask Rick how he wants me to handle this year's run and then I'll get started on the signup thread and stuff.

I got my fingers crossed, but I'm thinking, Man its gonna be hot that late. I'm going to hope for an Artic cold front like last year :p to keep the temp out of triple digits.

Geralld,

Whever we were it was lightly traveled, none of us knew where we were, 4 trucks I believe, we found the long straight sandy and grassy road that heads back to town after the conclusion of Golden Spike (prerunner style) and missed a turn I believe ended up down the backside of some hill and in a valley for a couple hours, we had a good time but were getting worried towards dark.
I now have GPS

There werew lots of natural gas wells in that area, eventually we found a paved highway that got us back to town. There were some spots on that narrow trail that were pretty hairy :)

I'm one of those guys that likes to show up, choose a group and run the trails, eventually I'll learn their names....

I just noticed that the dates for that weekend are June 3-5, not 4-6.

I corresponded with Rick and made a group dinner reservation for Saturday night at the Branding Iron. Before anyone hollers, think about it - we've tried just about everything else for an alternate dinner and the Branding Iron always worked out the best; with semi-decent food, not too expensive, a separate room area to meet in, and the least hassles of anywhere we've tried - plus no other place offers Lesbian Karaoke, LOL. :D The only other option would be an outside BBQ but we would be at the whim of the weather. Is there anyone who is dead-set against the Branding Iron and really would prefer a BBQ? If enough really want to do that I can cancel the reservation.

I'll set up a Signup thread today. Is anyone planning on coming that has not already been to Moab? I think most if not all of us are veterans? I'll keep the signup thread simple this year since most of us know the score already; we just need a central point of information to see who is planning on coming, what they want to do, and where they plan on staying.... I'm open to all suggestions from everyone. :)

Some of us have talked about taking an extra two days for an additonal run. Another possibility that more people might be able to pull off would be a single extra day going through Lockhart Basin, instead of two whole days to go to another area over a hundred miles away.....
