I'm not going with the group this year, but I'll second what they are saying.

GET THE GEARS FIXED!

Moab, if anything, provides MORE traction than your local highway. You will twist your truck's running gear into a pretzel without proper gears. Heck, it winds up trucks that have the proper gears until there is a place for some wheel slip to get it all unwound/unbound again.

Well guys I've been trying to work this out for the past several days, but it looks like I may have to miss Moab for the first time :( Part of it is my fault and part of it is messed up events and circumstances.

The part that is my fault is that Moab is a ten day long/ thousand dollar trip for me and I'm short of cash but we just bought a boat, so now we're REALLY short of cash, lol.
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=133989

Out of my control is that a couple of weeks ago one of my best friends changed his wedding date (I'm supposed to be a groomsman) up one week to the same weekend as Moab. In addition there's a couple of other more minor things that have come up that in themselves aren't major, but combined with the boat, time, finances, and wedding, just added on to the pile to make it even more difficult to sort this out.

I am seriously considering backing out of the wedding but that still leaves time and finances and a couple of personal issues to work out.

Stay tuned :( You guys know that there's no way I miss Moab unless I'm dead or something..... I'm still trying to sort this all out.

Dude if you run those gears like that you are crazy :O I guess I can bring you my old t-case for when you break yours ;) I would either stay home or just come and ride along with someone, but I would definately not run like that.

Gerald that sucks. You are kind of like the ring leader for the whole madness that we call the Moab explorers ;) I hope you get it worked out, I hate decisions like that.

If even "Mr. Moab" (Gerald) has to miss Moab, then I don't feel so bad at having to miss it myself. My truck is in much better shape to tackle Moab this year with a new lift, suspension work, bumpers, sliders, on 33's, but my schedule totally sucks - plus this year Kathy and I are headed to Newfoundland for a week's worth of mission work.

There is always next year, and by then I'll have the Ranger ready for the 5+ stuff -- and have a tow rig to deal with the long trip.

Have fun guys!

not go what are ya CRAZY??????????? $500 for a R&P install seems high, shop around a little slap those babys in and lets ROCK!!!!

$500 to install 1 ring&pinion! I payed less than that to have both ends of my X done. If you already have the gears it shouldn't cost more than $100-150.

They quoted me 300 just for labor. Im gonna go talk to a local guy tomorrow that told me he would do it for 100 bucks if i had all the parts. You guys think i need a complete rebuild kit?

for the rear, I didn't have the rebuild kit. I just put the ring and pinion in and called it good. The rear is very easy to install. My dad and I did the rear in about 3 hours.

Yeah, Moab!

You changed the gears?

JTX,
You shouldn't need an entire kit. Just get the pinnion bearings, crush sleve and a new pinnion seal and call it good.

yep, that's all I had, just the minimum.

Joey- yes, my dad and I did the rear gears, then Warrlord on this site set up my front gears with the limited slip.

You think i could handle it? I have done almost everything you could think of to a car, just not gears. Did you have instructions?

all the info and instructions that I used are right here:
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/

go down to the bottom where it says "Gears & Lockers"
I read most of those articles, and it was all there.
I'm sure you can do it.

Are there any runs planned for Fri?

I dont know the answer to that but i'll go on a run with you. Our rigs are almost the same so we should be fine. If i remember right last year we did TTOW and the fins and things the same day. I think that was on friday?

We should be pulling in around noon on Thursday, unpacking, and then hitting one of the shorter trails. (Last time we ran over to Hell's Revenge and went screaming through it rather quickly to get out before dark.)

However, we may have to leave Sunday afternoon because Jefe has to be in Minnesota Monday morning. We'll see how that pans out.

We typically meet up for runs on Friday, Saturday and for those that still have the time, Sunday.

I should be able to run Fri. Sat. and Sun.
That is if I don't break something.

If anyone breaks will get it fixed! Theres enough of of explorer freaks we could prob rebuild the hole suspension in an hour. lol

I am doing what I can to make this! My truck is still being de-bugged from the conversion, driveshafts have been in the shop two days, OD and CEL lights are on, scanner is waiting, if the two codes present are the two codes I think they are, she'll be fixed this weekend :)

Send money!
Man these OBD-II scanners are expensive!
