MOAB EXPLORER EXTRAVAGANZA 2001

Gerald,
I just showed Patrick were you wrote about him coming out. He thought that was nice you are looking out for the kids.
He said he hopes your son can go, he wants someone to play with.
I agree, I would like to see Gofast (Nowslow) take his family along also. We also want to see his creation in person.

Ya'll don't seem to understand. This place gets packed. We need to plan this accordingly. Moab is a small town and there are alot of people that go there, if a large group shows up the same time as us, someone is going to be camping out because there won't be enough rooms for everyone.

Ray, I understand this...But, I'm curious on two things...Is camping bad at this time of year? And what if we're the first of the most likely 2 large groups and get the motel rooms first? Maybe by planning this far in advance would help. Just a thought :)
Thanks,
Pete

Camping in MOAB is great....as long as you don't mind the sand...EVERYWHERE. In your beer, your shorts, sleeping bag, raviolies. I personally wouldn't go and not camp. I go to rough it.

Sand? What's that? I've camped on the Michigan sand dunes! Does that mean that I'll have an idea as to what sandy is like? Now what is the weather around this time of year...All I know is if I gotta sleep in my truck, I would do just to be able to go to Moab...not to mention, maybe i need to look into getting my A/C fixed...It currently doesn't work..Hopes are high for me to go :)
Thanks,
Pete

Camping in Moab is like pitching your tent in the middle of someones party. It was ok when I was young, but personnaly after about 3am, I want to go to sleep. Ask Matt Adams about this.
Planning this early is manditory if were are going to have a large group.

Well, let me tell ya this..I don't know how y'all party on your west coast events, but after a long day wheelin, I'm pretty damn tired and I want my sleep...thats right...the youngin here wants sleep not partying....Not to mention, I think this adds to the truckin event...call me crazy, but waking up...makin some food around the morning campfire is hella fun for me! Not to mention, those are one of the few times I'm sure I could have fun with my dad...Mine me, he doesn't trust me alot with my wheeling...hes a bit anxious about it...I think this is cause he doesn't know what our trucks can really do, and we could show him what they can do
Not to mention, I really wanna wheel with the west coasters...See how they are....Does anyone have an address from moab...I want a general address to see approx driving times and distances...I'm curious:)
Thanks,
Pete

LOL well if I went again I'd probably camp. The first night I was there I wanted sleep and everyone was off partying and I was playing the part of "old man adams" thinking of yelling "shut up you hooligans, I'm trying to get some sleep!" LOL then the next night it was just "if you can't beat em, join em! So I joined em! Next night everyone from BYU was gone, so I got some sleep again :).

CCR2000 was our first trip and we had a BLAST!!
I thought everyone did good at there partying even though they came and told us to be quit. Just setting around the camp fire and visiting was good enough for me.
By the way, is there any places to put a camper? I'm pretty sure my folks will join us and they will pull there trailer.

Oh No!!

From the look of that schedule every weekend has something going on. We'd better cancel the whole thing. Seriously, Moab is a fairly major tourist destination, when I drove through there two weeks ago it was PACKED. We are not going to be able to get around having a crowd unless we go in the winter. So somebody has to decide what dates. I still vote for the 19th-21st but I am flexible.

I'm good for that set of dates...I can camp in a tent or truck as long as it's not 90 billion degrees over night....
Pete

PERRY....There are two or three rv parks in/around moab.

Check out

www.moabutah.com

RF....it gets COLD in the desert at night.

Paul..I agree w/ you. I don't think I have EVER been there when it wasn't busy. I found camping spots open even at Easter Jeep Safari so any weekend is good for the campers.

In reality, I'd like may, but fathers day weekend, I don't know how my dad would look on that as going....Um, camping, would probably be hot as hell! um, but thena again, I may be luck and have more fun stuff to play with then....maybe a winch...But who knows...all i do know is it's a two day drive for me to get there...so, ya know...sorry, but i'd like it to be cool out should I be campin:)
Man, where is everyone else...there were a ton of people postin to go on the other moab post...oh well, they'll see it soon enough
Thanks,
Pete

Whoa...Hix...I am impressed! Good research! What is the elvation of Moab? If y'all are wondering why I'm posting alot, it's only cause I'm trying to be as involved as I can:) Us Illinoisian are very interested!
Thanks
Pete

Pete, I can't remember exactly, but the city of Moab is around 4,000ft. Most of the trails are also in that range, but the Top of the World trail climbed up to over 7,000 ft.

HIX, you da man! Desert nights do get cool and it looks like campers will still have nighttime temps in the 60's in mid-June. Midday highs of 89 (call it up to mid-90's on the trail) don't bother this Texan at all.

I'll officially put my vote in now for that mid-June weekend. Final answer. :-)

Record high temp for June was 113. Record high for May is "only" 102. The later in June you go the higher the temps are likely to be. I personally don't want to wheel in 100 deg + temps. I might as well stay home in Phoenix.

The first weekend in May was great last year. We didn't have any trouble with the Toyota group and the weather was great. My vote is to keep the event on the same weekend it was last year May, 5-6 2001.

I just looked up the trip report from the run Jack and I took in June of '99. Here is an excerpt:

"The weather HAD been predicted as wonderful for this time of year with temps in the 80s, but it was not to last. It was over 100 when we cruised into Moab and on our first day of wheeling the temp in town was 108, the same temperature Rick and his wife Char had tried to leave in Phoenix!. We guzzled water and Gatorade like somebody would spend money on their rig!"

Wheelin' in temps like that knocks the heck out of you unless you never get out of your airconditioned cabin. That's unlikely when you need to spot yourself and others. Also, airconditoners and cooling systems don't work at their optimum levels while driving 3mph in 108 degree heat. And how are all these kids going to handle the heat in mid June?

If the weather is that unpredictable and has the ability to climb that high then you are right. Like I said, I'm there no matter when we go.

If it's not mid-June, then last year was so perfect it might as well be the same time this year too. Might as well start a consistent yearly event.

Gofast, we were wanting to combine this with another stopover at the Ouray trails, but I have doubts as to whether they are passable in early May. That could change our plans a little. I still want to take the whole week so we could pre-run and do even more Moab trails.
