Hello all. I have the factory nav system and would love to be able to hook my mp3 player into it. Are there any interfaces that will work yet? I know people with F150s with the same nav system have had some success but when I contacted Logjam electronics about this they said that there wasn't offered nor would there be in the near future an aux interface for the explorer nav system. Have any of you found a way around this? I don't have an ipod, I prefer my Creative Zen Micro Photo so all I would need is a headphone type input. Thanks in advance for the help.

I may be wrong but isn't there a AUX input in either the center console, glove box, or by the rear stereo controls?

I wish there was but I think that's only in the 07s and up.

The easiest thing you could do is get an FM transmitter it will also be the least expensive, I don't think theres anything you can do to add a aux input.

So I know you don't use the iPod, but Brandmotion has a product out there for the iPod that connects to the Nav unit in my '06 EB. For my config, it runs through the satellite, but they have an option for stereos that don't have satellite. Best yet, I have use of the factory controls on the iPod and the nav screen displays the song and artist. So if you are willing to part ways and move to the iPod world, I would suggest the Brandmotion solution.

I've been waiting for one of these to show up.. Do you have any pictures of the screen in action ?

I can take some pictures but it'll be a bit before I can get them posted as I'm going out of town for a week. To be honest, it's not that exciting of a display, just the artist and title, similar to the screen the satellite radio uses.

That's cool - No worries then. Can you get to the menu to shuffle songs, change playlists and those types of operations ? That's what I was really concerned about.

Actually the statement I just found in the installation manual may be a dealbreaker for me :

Remember, you’ll need to be able to disconnect your iPod to listen to the Satellite Radio.

I have actually considered switching to an Ipod but I hate to give up on my Zen just because of this. Not to mention I already have tons of accesories for it that wouldn't work with the Ipod. Of course it doesn't work with Windows Vista but then again what does.

So Steve, not sure where the disconnecting the iPod comes into play with you. Brandmotion install guide and accessories allow you to clip a special iPod holder (they even have different foam pieces to fit the different iPods) into your glove box. You can simply slide the iPod into the craddle and away you go. When you want to listen to the satellite, you simply slide it out of the craddle. I usually just flip it around so the iPod won't settle into the dock connector, but stays in place in the holder. I didn't want to have to reach into the glove box each time, so I installed mine in the armrest console which works perfect for me. To access music you have a few choices by category, artist, album, and playlist (there could be one or two more but I don't remember). You select how you want to listen to music, i.e. artist, album, playlist and then scroll through to the particular one you want. The issue is if you want to listen to an artist that starts with a M, do you go A to M or Z to M, either way, through all your artists which can take a while. The easiest thing to do is create a playlist and scroll to that. You can shuffle songs, within the category or within the whole iPod. There are a few hiccups with the system: 1) if you pick a song on the iPod and then put it in the holder, most likely you won't get that song, rather it will select the 1st song on the iPod. If you are jamming to an artist, turn your car off, and then come back, sometimes it resets back to the 1st song on your iPod. A few hiccups, not the end of the world. If you plan on using this for road trips and drives of 30 minutes or more, I recommend. If you are going to use it whiel you are in and out of your car doing errands, not as much.

I appreciate the detailed insight.. I just have to decide now whether I go this route or remove the factory HU and replace with e Pioneer Z2 or similar.

Thanks!

I have the navigation radio and plug my Ipod into the rear aux inputs on the DVD player.

I wish I had the rear DVD player. I didn't want one because we don't have kids and don't plan on having any so I didn't think it was neccesary. I think I'm going to try one of the aux. inputs from PIE......I know it says it doesn't work with factory navigation but if I don't have sat. radio or rear seat entertainment doesn't that mean the CAN port is free so this should work. Plus if I bought a new Explorer with navigation it comes standard with the aux. input so the factory is doing it somehow. I wish I could get my hands on a new one and take the radio out to see how they've done it.

$225 for that brandmotion one seems steep!

I added ipod and HD radio to my stock nav. :)

I can't tell you, but it rhymes with...

http://www.peripheralelectronics.com/homepage.aspx The PXAMG. I added the HDRT, but it's not necessary.

By the way, it's the same one that Ford is now offering OEM, except that the Ford one is white and has a different name on it. Oh, and it costs twice as much.

solution?

I think I may have finally discovered a solution for the problem of adding an aux. jack to the factory navigation. I have spoken with Peripheral tech support and they assure me that the PXDX2 is compatible with the factory navigation and will allow you to add an aux. port that can be accessed thru the "Media" button. Here's the link:

My plan is to use this in conjunction with a 3.5mm isolated chassis mount jack like the following:

http://www.ace4parts.com/Products/35mm--Stereo-Jack--Panel-Mnt--Isolated__70-534.aspx

I should be able to use an RCA-3.5mm male patch cord and cut the male end off and splice this into the 3.5mm chassis mount jack. You can then mount this jack into the stock location (for 07+ that is) in the center console beside the power port. While this will not look completely stock to us that know, it should appear so to everyone else. However if you prefer the completely stock look I found out that you can purchase part # 8L8Z-19A164-A. It appears to be the factory aux. input jack but only the jack and the list price is $108.50 compared to 2 bucks for the generic. To me definitely not worth the difference. I'll be taking the center console apart this weekend to make sure I have enough clearance for the jack and if so I'll be purchasing everything to get ready for the installation. I'll be sure to let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks. Found it here.

Where did you buy it?

By the way, nice video demonstration here:

I still don't quite get how it works on an '06 with navigation though since I don't believe I have an 'aux' input setting. ??

Exactly.. From there footnotes :

Radios must be “CAN-BUS”, Satellite "Ready", OR have “MP3” printed the face, an AUX button and Ford Phase-II 16/24-pin connectors on the back
