I had heard about people spinning their diff housings on the 8.8, but I never heard of any of our members ever doing it. That led me to believe the occurance was so rare that I didn't need to worry about it.

That was until the last time I went to Truck Haven:D I finally spun my own diff housing.

I brought it to FST to straighten back out and weld the tubes to the housing. When they started twisted the housing back in place the factory plug welds just fell right out.

Looking at them it's amazing they held for as long as they did. You can tell that there was very little penetration.

I've heard that the way to do this is to weld an inch or so on top, let it cool then do an inch on the bottom let it cool... and keep going like that.

Those are pins, not weld plugs.

Well the welded in pins fell out:p:

Or you can just weld 3 or 4 half or one inch spots equally around the tube housing. I even had my axel truss welded into where the tube meets the housing

It's a good idea to have the housing checked for straightness afterwards. For sure if it's welded all the way around.

well with a pinion angle like that what do you expect.

:D

Yep... forgot to add that part. They did use an alignment bar to check for straightness before and after the welding. No correction was needed, the housing spun perfectly on the tubes.

The way they got the pumpkin back in line was interesting. The axle never left the truck. They took a big ass crescent wrench which by his description must have been at least two feet long, grabbed onto the diff housing with it and then used a bottle jack to apply pressure to the end of the wrench.

I think Matt suggestion of a tow strap and a winch just might have worked. :D
I'm glad we didn't try it though, just incase we f'ed it up more.

Is that one of those new RockJock 8.8's? :p:

Rick, You just have too much horsepower in the orange Ex.
