My wife drives a 1997 Dodge Caravan with the three speed transmission. Most mornings when she shifts into reverse, there is a few second delay, then a huge shutter, before it goes into gear. Sometimes it does not go into gear at all, until it has warmed up for several minutes (gear indicator will shift to R, but the transmission will not shift), sometimes, it is hard to get the shifter to move from park to reverse. Everything disappears if we let the van warm up for several minutes.
I have done some research on the net, and it looks like Dodge is now recommending ATF+4, instead of the ATF+3 recommended in the manual. I have also found, through the net and from talking to others with the same problem, that the problems I describe are common. Will changing the fluid help? Any other suggestions?
