My 95 4.0 RWD manual has got progressively worse with no fuel pump AND ignition ONLY on startup, after not running for some time. Usually overnight. Never quit while running. Possibly crank angle sensor, ign. switch or PCM?

There's a way you can tell if it's the CKP, if the CHECK ENGINE light is on during cranking I believe that means it's OK. Not 100% sure though, I may be wrong.

so theres 0 fuel pressure and 0 spark? just confirminf thats what tou mean

Might be a faulty asd relay, if BOTH spark and
fuel are absent...

Owners manual will give location.

Yes, although this is an intermittent issue that has become more and more consistent. NEVER dies when running. ALWAYS an issue on attempted start up. From 1 out of 25 times to 1 out of 1.25 times or there abouts.

does the fuel pump prime? usually if it were just the fueling issue not the spark issue id say try to prime multiple times not sure on the spark one since pats doesnt disable that.

Fuel pump AND ign. system doesn't operate AT ALL when problem occurs. May work one day, then not the next now. May not fire off, then fire off a few hours later. This is a 95 4.0. Don't know if "PATS" is relevant...or what it is. 😉

righttttt youve got a 95 it doesnt have passive antitheft. hmmm i dont conpletely remember but i wonder if this is related to postal daves issue. not too sure, forgot exacrly what the issue was in the thread. sorru just spitballing

Check ECM relay and socket.

Could be faulty ignition switch
Yeah, I've zeroed in on the crank angle and ign. switch at this point. A Facebook Explorer club member mentioned a, so far, SEVEN year solution. He MOVED the wires by the crank sensor!

Follow this procedure, even if it seems silly do not skip steps. It will identify loss of crank sensor signal.

Tapping the crank sensor with a screwdriver handle might bring it to life.

Yeah, right now I got my 93 Escort running again. Man oh man, with my "sport" suspension upgrades and 195/50-15's, it's a lot more fun diving into corners the Explorer would be sliding sideways through! What DOES bother me about both? Wheel hop. Mainly in dirt with the Explorer. Think I'm running 235/75-15 M+S's on it.

the X will wheel hop, yes. the EE kit if it was still around or if you can get your hands on em were a great kit to improve handling i hear. in 2022 the besr we can do is thicker seays good shocks and a torsion lowrring, which replicates the ee kit iirc. not a lowered guru, so not too sure but thats my udberstanfing

The CKP sensor connector is worth having a look at, it's down low and can get a little manky, particularly when a little oil seeps into it. The sensor itself should be easy to test with a meter & a piece of steel.

Oops, I confused this with my Jeep nomenclature. Like Turtle said, it's actually an ECM relay, or on early models called an EEC relay. Located in the 'relay center' under the hood.
When swapping relays, spray the relay socket with WD-40. This helps clean possible corrosion on the terminal connections. (I have fixed many electrical opens with this stuff...)

There's also a related fuse in the underhood fuse box (30a??), Which is obviously good since the problem is intermittent, but the terminals could be corroded. Remove and reinstall the fuse and spray the terminals with WD-40 too.

As stated above

If you are indeed losing fuel pump power AND no spark then it points to the PCM or EEC relay / fuse issue, possible ignition switch
The Crankshaft sensor will only effect spark not fuel

No fuel pump and no spark. Suspect no injector ground signal either, but I haven't checked. Cranked it up yesterday after it sat for weeks. One hour later, same symptoms. This morning, cranked right up and parked it.
