Oil filters

This may seem like a stupid question but I went to the parts store today to get a new oil filter and they offer two different thread sizes one is standard and the other is metric and they had no idea when I asked them. How can I know which one to get? I have tried to look everywhere for this so any help is appreciated. Mine is a 1996 2wd 5.0.

regular? lol just go to walmart and get you a good old motorcraft FL820s filter for 3 bucks,... cant go wrong with OEM

Thats all I want to do is just replace it with a regular filter but every brand has two different part numbers and one of the filters is listed as standard and the other is listed as metric so I am just at kind of stuck with no way to tell which one is the correct part for my truck. I copied this from the autozone website. Hope this helps.

I've never had this problem before... Have you asked the people at the auto parts place? They should know... I went to NAPA a few times and got the filter there, just ask for a NAPA Gold filter and it should be right. I can't remember the last time I've had a Fram filter but I've heard Fram is pretty crappy anyway. Go with the Motorcraft, like he said you can't really go wrong with it.

Isn't the FL1A the standard thread, and the FL820 the metric thread? My 4.0L uses FL1A but my GF's motorhome with the V10 (modular) uses FL820.

I would think that the 96 5.0L would use a FL1A, but I don't have the owners manual handy to check.

Edit: I guess its the FL820 confirmed below

You can tell by looking at them. One is obviously larger. Mine was the smaller sae one. I suppose it depends on what oil pump was origonaly installed. Look under the bumper when you are at the store. sometimes they will let you take a part outside if you leave them collateral

Yeah I asked them and they had no idea either. I agree about the fram it just happened to be the second one listed on the autozone website. I will have to check at walmart and Napa and if nothing else I guess I could just buy both and see which one matches. Thanks guys.

I've been using the Fram PH2 forever on my '97 5.0 AWD (136,000). Seems to go on just fine...no leaks.

ph2 is the same as a motorcraft 820s. its the metric/smaller filter..

ph8a is the same as the motorcraft fl1a which is the bigger filter with the sae hole.

The Explorer 302 takes a metric filter, the FL820S. The 4.0's are all the FL1A filter.

Don't buy the Fram crap, all testing ever done puts them at the bottom for quality, along with all cheap name brands.

Buy the oil and filter at Walmart, they have the best pricing.

let me correct you, all the OHV 4.0s take the FL1-A the SOHC 4.0s take the FL820s

You can delete your posts, I'd suggest that you reconsider the last one. I have owned all three engines, and changed all of the oil in each countless times. I know what filter they take.

I know my '01 with the 4.0 SOHC took an FL1A as well as my '92 and '94 OHV motors. All the modular motors take the FL820S (4.6/5.4 motors).

I also agree with that both 4.0's I've changed oil in both motors several times and both take FL1A.

you must be right! i will notify the dealership i work at tommorow that we've been puttin the wrong filters in it may be the early sohcs took fl1-as but i will gladly take a picture of my 03 with an 820 up in there...then grab a copy of the ol' oil and filter chart from work and post it?

The metric threads of a FL820S will not go onto the FL1A base(4.0 engine block(the OHV and SOHC use the same block)). The FL1A is a much larger and thus better filter. The 302 has to have a short filter because of the adapter which they all have.

well i can tell you we put 820s on 4.0s, exact years i cant tell you right now but i will post back with a picture of our oil and filter sheet... i know at least my 03 takes an 820.

That should make it a 4.6, but of course Ford could have made an adapter for the block to allow the metric filter to work on the 4.0 SOHC. There is room under the 4.0's for about a 12" long filter. I bet you have dealt with 4.6's, or the engines have an oil filter adapter.

well im sure they were 4.0s so they may have done that :scratch: im thinking they switched 02 and up but dont hold me to that, i will take a pic of our sheet
