I was looking into gettin an oil separator for my Mustang. http://www.brenspeed.com/05-08-mustang-fuel---induction-oil-seperators.html
These S197's are known to get a lot of blowby through the vaccum lines into the intake manifold. And it got me thinking has this been done on Explorers as well? I'd be curious if there was a kit out there for the 5.0 if not is it something we'd have to fabricate ourselves?

Good sources , although none have any pics or step by step details on installing these on a 5.0 "Explorer". Also are all these kits universal, or is there a specific one that is best used on our trucks?

Bump, Anyone ever installed these on the 5.0 trucks?

Thomas, I considered it on mine. I seem to recall that the consenus is that you install it on the line just before the PCV. I have a hard enough time getting at that line to do Seafoam and it's even harder since the UI spacer was installed last summer. I think it would be a bear to not only install, but to get at the separator to empty it. I don't think I've seen ANY threads on it being done on a 5.0.

Hmm well I may just might have to take on this little challenge of installing one. My friend Geoff You met has all the resources to help get it done. All I really need to know is what kit to use on my application .

I don't think there's going to be a "kit". 100% custom my friend. I've seen people use those separators that you use for compressors and what not. Just splice it into that PCV line you're there. Simple, right? :D

Make sure you document your quest, take lots of pics etc.

When I get around to doing I'll make sure to snap photos. I may just order the same one as the one I plan to get for the stang.

I have a STEEDA kit on the way for both the GT and the Golden EX. I've been searching for what would be the best location to install this? I've seen people put this on the crankcase breather on the pass. side and others in line with the PCV lines on the Driver's side. Does it depend on which application. In this instance the 5.0?

Thomas, never seen anyone do it on a 5.0, so I await to see what you and Geoff decide. :)

Ok this is what I came out with. Not too sure if I'm happy with the location just yet because I dunno if the cannister will hold up to the engine temperatures. I also may add one later on down the road on the other side using long hoses for the PCV valve. I may modify the passenger side the same way and try to mount it on the fender outta the way from all the heat.

Thomas:

So far, so good. Let us know how effective it is at capturing blow-by. I don't think will be an issue. Those things should be designed to withstand it.

Keep us posted.

I didn't see alot of oil on the Ex when I took the breather hose off. But goodness, The PCV hose on the Mustang had a fair amount in it. I slid my pinky in it and when I pulled it out it was nearly coated in oil. The S197's are known for blowby. I'll keep you posted on how effective it is.

So far there's nothing in the Explorer's catch cannister at all after a couple of weeks. But after the same time and a couple hundred miles this is what's in the Mustang's cannister.

I guess I'm not overly surprised. If you've ever checked the inside of your air intake tube, there isn't a lot of oil residue left behind. I guess it begs the question if the mod is effective for our trucks or if it needs to be installed elsewhere.

Thanks for the update, Thomas.

I should probably have place the Explorer's catch cannister in line with the PCV lines in the back. I would of had to buy a couple of feet of hoses to stretch it it to mount it where I could reach it to drain then routed back to the intake manifold from there.
