Power Liftgate

Spoke to a nice lady at Ford Customer Service yesterday after I complained to Ford directly. She knew all about the problem and that in some cases it was related to temperature but indicated that replacing the catch is not the solution so it is great that it seems to be working for some owners but Ford must know something else is wrong but is not tellling

...Works like the way it should. I tested it out on very cold weather her in CT and it worked every time.
mdc160,

In case you missed my other post, I sent a reply to your PM. Check your inbox for the details.

...In the mean time Ford has been very responsive by offering interim measures. I'll report the results of my repair.
Thanks for taking time to post, PJFW8. I see Kristina is set to call you; let me know if you want a sooner follow-up.

Got mine back and the latch was changed ..... Won't know for sure until it chills down abit outside, but the issue with us all seems to be the latch mechanism, so I'm pretty confident that we got it!
Thanks for keeping us in the loop, rmp301. Be sure to stay warm! :D

AllanJD,

Welcome to the forum. :) I want to offer my help by arranging a call from the Customer Service Manager in your area. So I can do this, please send a PM with your contact information, VIN, mileage, and dealer name/state.

Cory

AllanJD is correct. Tomorrow, at Ford's suggestion I am getting the problem fix you mentioned, but Ford Customer Service made it clear that this may not solve the problem. I am glad it worked for you and hope it will solve my issue. Ford is working on a reliable fix. In the mean time Ford has been very responsive by offering interim measures. I'll report the results of my repair.

Slight delay in getting the part. The dealer will call and needs only a few minutes for the work. Expect an update mid-week.

Cory,

Details sent as requested.

I look forward to good news this week, PJFW8. :)

Thanks for the heads up, Allan; if you didn’t already notice, I sent you a reply.

UPDATE The part was installed today. Very quick. So far so good. The release is smoother, but I will need to wait for colder weather to verify the fix. The mechanic noticed metal to metal contact (scraping or rubbing) on the original part. I'll report any future failures.

30 this morning. opened perfectly.

I thought you were going to wait for colder weather.:D Mine has worked at temps ranging from 0 to 10 degrees. Yesterday it was 41. I saw a fellow coming out of the post office in shorts!
Now if only that flip up door door providing access to the USB ports would work in cold weather I'd be happy.

I recently relocated from Wisconsin. I don't miss the pleasure of -15 degree car noises. Sunny and 65 is nice! Final UPDATE. This morning it was 15. The hatch opened smoothly. I am confident of the fix. Thanks to the Ford folks monitoring this forum for their help!

Still waiting..........

Seems to have all gone quiet on this thread. I have still heard nothing from Ford about the longer term fix but the catch replacement is looking more attractive since at the weekend after grocery shopping the rear opened itself as we went round a corner spewing a couple of bags onto the road even though it showed it was shut when we left. This happened twice so this has now elevated this as a safety issue for me.

Anyone else have any updates?

As of last week there is a TSB. My fix worked. Give customer service a try.

Was it closed when you put it in drive? It will reopen if not closed and put into drive.

All indications were that it was closed when we took off - no message on the dash indicating otherwise

Fixed!

Finally had the tailgate issue resolved today and everything seesm to be working. The fix is the installation of a new liftgate striker and there is a Ford Technical Service bulletin 12-2-6 on this issue. The new replacement part needed is BB5Z-7843252-A

Does anyone else hear a grinding noise from their power liftgate when it's opening? I'm pretty sure it's the hydraulic system. Just didn't think it'd be so noisy.

It's not hydraulic; its screw actuated. It makes the same sound as many power tailgates.

Not sure if this is what you guys are referring to, but I recently started noticing this problem. We're on on a road trip at the moment, and the temps have been in the high 30s to mid 40s.

Sorry for the "jerkiness" of the video, but this is the second night it has done this and it is starting to get a bit irritating.

This is a 2012 Explorer, so just over a year outside of our our "bumper-to-bumper" warranty. I plan on contacting our dealer once we get back to AZ (at the end of week) on this issue.

There is a 3yr/36k bumper to bumper.. you are beyond that on a 2012??

No, I was thinking the 1 year unlimited.

One thing you may want to try.. use your left steering wheel control and go into the vehicle settings. One of the options is power lift gate. Turn that off. Then when you go to open it in the back, it should just pop open and you can manually lift it.

Try to manually open it and then close it, then change the setting back to on.

I'm curious if a full open/close will resolve it.. as if it feels resistance so it reverses itself almost immediately.

Hi RocketNerd,

Have you been to your dealership so they can take a look? Additionally, I'm happy to step in and get your case escalated to your regional customer service manager; just send me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, daytime phone number, and VIN. I'll get the ball rolling!
