Project Hazey

@CDW6212R The ones I observed on RockAuto.com were in the $150-ish range for each, last I checked. Could be the same ones; I wasn't aware of the spline issue, but have heard of failing cages on some examples. Nothing's wrong with the MOOG's I got last time, but I figured trying out the TRAKMOTIVEs might be an interesting idea.

I would tend to wonder though if it wouldn't wobble, with that extra joint in there... Seems like a recipe for disaster, perhaps, but an interesting idea either way.

I've heard of examples which failed catastrophically lasting as little as 1500 miles and as much as 30,000 miles, before failure... The ones that didn't fail prematurely are still running strong, but time will tell future weaknesses. I got 180k-ish out of my OEM's on the Sport, and the Durango is sitting close to 150k on its original front end (wanders, replacing soon), so I would tend to expect better than that from a "more sophisticated" design. May be I'll just get more MOOG Problem Solvers, when the time comes. Always check out the competition, some times (rarely, but occasionally) a newcomer can change the game.

TRAKMOTIVE, are those the ones which Jamie and others have had come with bad splines?
no not me
My bad spline CV axle was for a custom mid travel suspension kit from TRUE TRAVEL DYNAMICS and the axle halfshaft was built by RCV
I would NEVER deal with True travel again for as long as I live, RCV those dudes are fine, finally took care of us after 2 years. They were not happy with true travel as he had already been given replacements for the defective parts and never told me, in fact he just ignored me after I didnt want to buy his mountaineer? WTH

Yes, sorry, the problem axles were those brand Jamie got for the long travel kit suspension, as he just described.

The Trakmotive CV axles are the same ones I just got recently also. Those look good in hand out of the box, I just got them as possibly a better part than all of the aftermarket stuff. In normal usage they all last well, the serious off road long range of motion is what is hard on the CV joints.

Sorry I'm late that's beautiful looks like a clone of my 2000 except probably doesn't have trannie issues.

@SuperGordo Thanks, it has served me well in these few months, and in the shape it's in, I expect it to last quite a long time. 217k with no hint of timing chain noise, and the front end feels practically new - I couldn't let the big one get away! Hurt the bank account though, ha ha!

@Flashflood Thanks, and nice! Gotta love the 2nd-gens, they're excellent pieces of machinery. The transmission feels really tight on this one, surprisingly so, in fact. I'm guessing it hasn't been rebuilt, just well maintained, because the reverse gear does take a little bit of time to engage, like it spins free for a second before a very tangible "clunk" when it connects. I'll pay attention to it and see if it gets worse, but in the short time I've had it, its behavior has been completely consistent.

@CDW6212R Good to know; once you toss 'em on your Ex, let us know how they work out for you in the long run! I don't treat the MOOG's on The Vulture nicely, and they seem to be holding up great so far, but that extra travel angle is very tempting.

My overhead console went intermittent on me to night, so I guess that's one more small issue to work out. It's amusing how external temperature and direction are very conspicuously missing, once you start referring to them.

It's a clone to mine as well. Same color inside and out. I just don't have the reverse sensors in the back bumper.

I didn't see in the pics. Do you have a moon roof?

Mine has a moonroof also.

The long-travel CV's from TRAKMOTIVE, are those the ones which Jamie and others have had come with bad splines? I think those were costing $500+ apiece, maybe more. I read that they have corrected the issue, but getting the first ordered parts corrected has been slow.
jamies one was RCV iirc in a long travel kit from true ravel?

edit: nevermind

That's what my 1999 Limited looked like some time before I bought it. I got it for $1500 from a JY, totaled with no wheels or seats(I found it through eBay(buying the seats)). That's where my 99/93 project began, so I painted it the original 93 Limited color, in my signature link. I need to make time to fix the trans and drive it again.

@donalds There ya go again, linking all the useful threads. Not my first rodeo swapping/toying with an overhead console; the Vulture's was dead when I got it, but I replaced it with one from an Ex that a local garage was parting out which happened to work. Kept the Vulture's broken one as a spare, may be I can get both of 'em working. I know for certain that the behavior on Hazey's here is exactly as described in that thread.

@Flashflood Yes sirree, I have to have my moon roof! Sure, it will leak eventually (they all do) but not having it makes the interior dark and dreary. If it's an option, all else being equal, I would always choose a roof window of some kind, on every car.

@tomahawk350 She sure is nice lookin', what wheels (and what size?) are those in the second pic?

@Fix4Dirt Confirmed by Jamie himself, yes, the ones with bad splines were RCV. Kinda leaning away from TRAKMOTIVE after the exploding cages I've read about, but if I ever manage to break a MOOG Problem Solver, I'll know to look for long-travels, since they exist now!

@CDW6212R I've read that thread, man, that's some piece of work! You should rebuild the 5R55E or manual swap it, keep her rollin'.

Well, since I'm ordering parts for The Vulture soon, I'm ordering parts for Hazey too.

Rear center VSS, parking brake hardware kit and shoe, gonna go for gold and just do the whole thing... might get a new cable too, just for good measure. Hazey isn't the one that I want to go full custom on, so the parking brake on this one stays normal.

Anybody know what the physical "acceleration switch" (ABS code C1102) component actually is? Searching the Web doesn't come up with much, except that C1102 universally disables ABS. I need heeeeeelp!

@donalds Thanks-o, you the man! That's what I've been looking for. G-switch is the magic word I didn't know. I read the whole thread, interestingly never encountered the issue with the pedal shudder/pulse on either of my Ex's. Currently reading the article linked in the thread, this is good information.
