I did a search for procedures to replace a rear CV axle on my 4th Gen.

I found one for I believe a 2nd Gen but I think the 4th Gen is much different.

I'm thinking the CV axle is bad because I get this clicking sound in the rear. (which is getting louder) I noticed it one day when idling next to a building and I thought maybe a brake caliper was loose. If I give it gas it gets quiet.
I jacked up the rear and checked the brakes and they were fine. I pulled on the wheel thinking loose bearing and it's tight. Checked the U-joints front and rear driveshafts and they're fine.
Now, a couple weeks later I can hear it while slowing for a stop or when I make a left turn. It has a clacking sound. It's definitely the driver side. There's no vibration. At driving speed it's quiet. That's why I think it's a CV issue.
Anyone replaced theirs and have pictures or a write-up? I cringe at what it might cost to have a shop do it. I will take it to a shop if need be.

I think I'm capable. I've swapped a Chevy V8 engine into my Mazda RX7 plus replaced the differential and axle shafts a couple of times. (drag slicks are hard on drive components. lol)
My only concern is getting it done in a timely manner. This is my daily driver and I can't afford to have it down more than a couple of days. I would use the RX7 but it's winter here in Wisconsin and it's in storage.

This is also for the sake of Cumminssladek15, who I think will be facing the same task. Looks a LOT more involved than I imagined.

I did something similar 3 times on mine, twice to replace the wheel bearing, and once to replace a cracked ABS ring. Never had to remove the shaft yet. It's a little pain, but doable. about 2-3 hour job. The ebrake re-assembly took me the longest each time.

Looks doable. I'll check into buying the parts needed.

My RX7 takes me 15 minutes to swap a half shaft. Most of that is jacking the car up and removing the tire. lol

Thanks Ronin8002 for the diagrams.
I fully intended to do this myself but a friend of mine who owns a speed shop where I inquired about purchasing the new axle offered to do the job cheap. I wasn't looking forward to working with snow and salt dripping all over me. (Wisconsin) lol

When he pulled the axle he found the outer joint worked fine in the up down motion but was frozen solid in the cup preventing in and out motion.

Thanks for help.
