Remote Start Facts (2011 - 2015 only)

I am looking for some direction from you guys with experience. I have a 15 sport with of course remote start. 5 button fob. The range honestly on my remote sucks from day one.. given winter is around the corner I am thinking about the remote access via cell app and kit. Can someone summarize for me what is needed with part numbers ?
I already have a hood switch already and believe an alarm.

Id also like to know what the annual cost for the remote access is.

THANKS. .

Hey guys thanks.. I was finding up to 14 but not 15 so I am hoping they are the same.. I have received a few contradictions locally.

So I had my dealer attempt to program keyless entry and remote start. At first they stated that they were unable to program the IKT I had brought in. When I went out to the car when they were done I was able to program the IKT with no issues using the "turn ignition 8 times" method.

However, the remote start functionality doesn't work. All the remote start options are available in the instrument cluster menus, but the remote does not start the car. The remote works for everything else (lock, unlock, panic), but not remote starting for some reason. Any ideas? Should I just have them try to re-enable remote start again? I also have the heated seats and steering wheel options in the menu and obviously my 2014 Utility doesn't have these. Does this mean they activated remote start incorrectly?

Where did you get your key? Is it a knockoff or legit Ford key? If knockoff you have to do a second type of programming that's listed in this thread somewhere.

I had the same issue, the ford technician couldn't get my key buttons to program when he added the non oem key if it matters, I had to use the key on off method to program it. They should have not added heated wheel if the vehicle is not equipped with it etc. I would have them take the options out that your vehicle does not have.
I haven't used the remote with built in key for a while on mine just the stand alone unit, but I think you are supposed to press lock and the start button twice fairly quickly in that order. If you keep starting the vehicle and shutting it off by remote just to try it out it will stop responding till you place the key in the ignition to reset it for some reason.

I'm using the Strattec 5912561 4-button IKT. The lock, unlock, and panic buttons work fine. I have some 3-button eBay knockoff remotes that don't have the remote start button that work just fine also.

I have not gotten the car to start via the remote at all even after trying the lock-start-start sequence multiple times. I do have the hood pin installed. I'll go back on Monday and have them re-enable the remote start through the software. I shouldn't see the heated steering wheel and seats options if they do it properly correct?

Is remote start check marked in the cluster?

Yes it is.

I am going to assume you have unchecked and re-checked it to see if that made a difference. BTW shoot me the VIN in a private conversation...IDS used to have an error in it that prevented 14 Utilities from having remote start enabled, I'd like to check to see if they have corrected it.

Billy confirm for us, as Reserved stated that you are pressing ..... lock..remote start..remote start.

Question. My car has heated front seats. I'm not sure the tech input that when activating my remote start. Is there a place this would be displayed in the menu? Currently i go vehicle to remote start. Then i see climate control, duration, and system with a check box. Under climate control there is auto and last settings. Should there be anything about the seats in any menu?

On page 127 the Remote Start settings show;
Climate Control Auto or Last Setting
Seats and Wheel Auto or Off
Wheel Auto or Off
Duration 5, 10 or 15 minutes

when they programmed mine he confirmed with me and looked over the vehicle to make sure it didn't have heated wheel etc when going thru the options, don't think its a problem but it would bother me knowing they didn't do the procedure correctly. Make sure you don't try to remote start it too many times, it will stop responding, when I went for a drive it started working again, I have no idea what the vehicle needs to see to reset itself. I don't have any any other ideas, bad remote? vehicle not meant to have remote start which would be really strange especially if it was a non P.I.? Are you starting it less than 30 feet away since the keys have terrible range?

I've tried driving it after starting it and still no change. It could be the remote but why would only the start button not work?

Might be they put the wrong circuit board in the IKT. They are different between 4 button remote start and 4 button with the trunk release.

I just wanted to confirm that everything in this thread worked for me. However, I did my setup by myself.

Using the VCX Nano tool from Amazon/Ebay, I was able to access the IDS and enable remote start myself. The tool and the software are $80. My local dealer told me they'd charge $100 to enable, so I figured this was a little bit of a deal.

I plugged the VCX Nano tool in, turned on IDS Version 100, and accessed the 2013 Explorer XLT. I went to the body - security - Remote Start option. We have the Ford My-Touch in our system. When enabling the remote start, it didn't ask about heated seats or heated steering wheel.

That was the easy part. The option was now enabled in our menu. I could edit the climate settings, defroster settings, and duration (5, 10, or 15 Minutes).

Now, the more difficult part. I purchased the cheap-replacement 4 button keys off of Amazon. My local hardware store wouldn't cut it because other people have complained that their key didn't work. I headed over to a different hardware store, and told them that the key is cheap and i wouldn't hold them responsible if it didn't work. They cut it for free!

I followed the programming instructions on this website (Enter key 1, turn to run, wait, enter key 2, turn to run, wait, enter un-programmed key 3, turn to run, wait). The key was able to program partly. It was able to start the system but i was getting the following error "Could not program integrated key." None of the remote buttons on the cheap key would work.

So, I went through the IDS software. Using the PATS functions, I erased and reprogrammed the first 2 OEM keys with no problem. However, the third "Cheap Key" gave me the same error. Again, i was able to start the car. But the whole purpose is to use the buttons (specifically the remote start button). I was getting the same "Could not program integrated key" every time i started the car. Non of the buttons on the cheap key would work.

On page 6 of this forum, I learned that there was an extra step for the cheap keys. After they are programmed to start the car, you have to also program the remote function. Turn the cheap key from off to run 8 times. On that 8th time, end on "run." After 5 seconds, the doors lock and un-lock. Hit a button on the cheap-key remote. I used the unlock button, but i don't think it matters. They keypad is now functioning. All buttons work including lock, unlock, alarm, and remote start.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for saving me $298 for two keys, and $100 to cut the keys, and enable remote start. In total, I spent $30 on the keys, and $80 on the VCX Nano (which may get sold somewhere in the future).
