Secondary Transmission Filter Installed (Feedback)

What's the difference between this Summit branded setup and this Perma-Cool branded setup? They look identical save for the filter itself being labeled as a Perma-Cool but the Summit one is $8 less.

I really want to get one of these since the trans was built about 20k ago and I want to keep it in shape. That plus I just bought about 20+ Advance Auto store-brand PH8A equivalents because they're $1.45 on closeout (that's nationwide AFAIK by the way and applies to all the Advance Auto Totalgrips, ask for them at the counter. They're basically Purolator PremiumPluses with a red grippy paint).

As I see it, your paying for the name.. thats it..

I actually got mine from a local speed shop instead of mail ordering it.

I figured as much.

Has anyone ever thought about using one of these for the power steering? I honestly don't know the pressures involved in PS and whether such a setup would work.

New question concerning these though not for an X. My friend just bought a 91 Maxima and after reading around about it it seems these transmissions are prone to failure around 100k (his has 109K). I looked to see what a filter would cost on Rock Auto and they had a little note under the part number; "transmission must be removed and disassembled for filter replacement". No drain plug, plus the filter is apparently just a screen. Gee, I wonder why these tend to fail.

As such, I doubt the fluid's ever been changed. I've driven it; there's no slippage but shifts are rather harsh with quick acceleration.

My plan is to advise him to get one of these kits, go to get a fluid flush and have them install it after they flush and then replace the filter a couple times in quick succession. Then get a flush/filter every 30k or so.

I'm wondering what you guys thought of this plan and whether he should do something different. I really don't want deferred maintenance to bite him in the ass if I can help it.

Also, in general are the pressures involved in the cooler lines similar enough to an engine application that the filter won't be in bypass most of the time? I thought pressures in a tranny were higher.

The pressures and flows in the tranny cooler lines are well wthin what these filters can handle. The filter will go into by-pass in extreme cold temperatures, or if you leave it on long enough to get almost completely plugged.
Your above recommendations for your friend's Maxima might be a bit overkill, but I would at least replace the fluid, and install a spin-on filter kit and change the filter once a year.

Just ordered the Summit G4980 kit, i'm coming up on 120K and am planning on doing an oil change, and trans filter change so i figured i'd add this filter to my transmission setup after reading all the reviews about improved shifting and the tiny metal particulate the oil filters were catching. i hate to think about those little metal bits floating around inside the ONE MAIN thing that puts the power on the road...

alright, well i tried the "disconnect both transmission lines, put them in a bucket and briefly start the engine" trick to try and figure out which transmission line was "send" and which was "return" - and i got an equal mess out of both lines..... this left me baffled and nobody on here has really described the trans fluid flow direction.....

with that said... i understand nobody wants to give potentially false information about the fluid flow because when somebody else hooks their filter up wrong they'll come here and start blaming other people's directions.... ANYWAY....

after skimming a few other sites online i found where someone said that the 5R55E transmission has a thermostat that doesnt send trans fluid to the cooler lines until the transmission is hot, so that seemed to explain why i got fluid just running out of both lines when i tried to check the flow direction on my COLD transmission.... upon further reading it was explained that the transmission fluid ran this direction -
TRANSMISSION -> TOP OF RADIATOR -> BOTTOM OF RADIATOR -> FACTORY AUX COOLER -> TRANSMISSION

(here is my source for the information in the above paragraph - http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1643295)

so, on my 5R55E automatic transmission on my 2000 FORD EXPLORER SPORT i added the Summit Aux Filter to the fluid flow path in this manner -
TRANSMISSION -> TOP OF RADIATOR -> BOTTOM OF RADIATOR -> SUMMIT AUX FILTER -> FACTORY AUX COOLER -> TRANSMISSION

I cannot guarantee that your transmission fluid flows through the components in the same direction and order as mine does, but i can SUGGEST that if you have the 5R55E Automatic transmission the fluid MIGHT possibly run in the same direction as mine. After hooking up my Auxiliary Transmission Filter kit in the fashion described above, i drove for about 9 miles with the engine running for around 25 minutes (i left it running as i went inside Advance Auto for some more Mercon V) with no leaks or transmission problems. My truck shifted perfectly through all 5 Gears with no hesitation, shuddering or slipping. It also shifted, without hesitation, shuddering or slipping, into Reverse. This leads me to believe my Aux Filter Kit is installed correctly. feel free to use this information for reference at your own risk, i'm not responsible if you hook your filter up backwards and screw something up.

hopefully this information is helpful, i'm sorry for being excessively wordy, i'm trying to cover all the bases, provide as much information as possible but still cover my own butt in the case that something posted here is incorrect. Photos of my install to come shortly.....

Ok so I got extremely lost reading these 20+ pages! I already added another tranny line cooler a while back and noticed a difference. But with all the part numbers that were said and different brands etc, can someone simply tell me which one from Summit I would need that has the inlet/outlet for the temp gauge?

Im able to find Temp Gauge/Dual Pod/Volt gauge on ebay that I liked and extremely cheap cause Im just going to hook it onto my center console extension.

Got plenty of wires of all sizes, lol, used to do car audio, but what I need to know is exactly which one from summit (part number) that I would need with the temp sending unit inlet/outlet already on it. Already have a place for install away from tires, so no rub at full lock or flex.

If you are going to supply your own fittings etc, you just need a remote oil filter "bracket" with a spot for a sending unit. One port is the in for the fluid, the other is the out of for the fluid and the one in the middle is where you put the sending unit to know the temp of the fluid as it gets to the filter.

Here is one at summit. I don't know if this is the cheapest one they have but it is one.

Yeah im gonna order that part, i just looked i got all the fittings and like 300 ft of 500*F hose and 150ft of gas line 750*F hose, so im gonna put it before the first cooler (i have two) does this sound good, also hows everyones doing years later?

lol i know i keep reviving this thread, just want to make sure im doing it all correct. I get hose, clamps, fittings, self tapping screws. So all I need is?

Of course the stubby m1 filter to match my m1 syn fluid :D Ive got a gauge pod already... but are those the three things I need? Thanks yall!:p::p:

I'm not overly impressed with the cyberdyne gauges. I had them on 2 weeks (water temp and trans temp) and had to have a new set sent to me. They seem to be very touchy about voltage shocks. "Show" (90ranjo?) also had a set of cyberdynes and he is actually the one that warned me about them blowing due to voltage spikes.

My ignition switch was a little "iffy" so sometimes it would act like I turned the key to start/on/start really quick. And my headlight switch would sometimes turn off the lights (old switch). I have since changed both of those out in hopes the new guages will last longer than 2 weeks.

Also, they do sell the gauge with sending unit together at summitracing. Check into that kit and if they have it in stock, get them together.

Also, even though the gauges are bright, they don't work in direct sunlight. I had to make a Hood to cover the gauges and when the sun is low and somewhat behind me I still can't read the gauges.

Hmm couldnt find them as a kit. i like green was one of the only reasons i was going with those exact ones, mine wont be in direct sunlight, will be down near the ashtray area.
